The coles Myer companies have doubled the flybuys points. Now you get 2 points for every dollar you spend. It is a great change. I hope the rewards do not become expensive.

Flys Buys calculates to be a vastly inferior scheme

Flys Buys is still a VASTLY INFERIOR SCHEME to most other reward schemes, in fact bordering on a rip off.
For example to fly from Sydney to Hamilton Island requires 41800 fly buys points which at 2 points for $5 spent requires $105,500 to be spent to fly to Hamilton Island. With nearly all other Credit Card reward schemes you get 1 point per dollar and Qantas require 30000 points to fly to Hamilton Island, so you need only spend $30000.
So obviously with Fly Buys you must spend nearly 400% more to get the same flight.

I think it is going fou forward. It is not definitely a short term special offer.

Kristo - you are missing a point (or a lot of points!!!).
First - Flybuys are free. You don't pay annual fees or any other fees.
Second - It does not stop you from earning points from your credit cards. I use my AMEX with FlyBuys. I still get 1.5 points on my AMEX cards for every dollar. FlyBuys is just a bonus.
Third - Their bonus offers are very generous during Father's day, Christmas, etc. During the father's day offer, I bought two pairs of trousers which I anyway needed. They were discounted from $58 to $45 each. Two pairs - I got 2500 points for $90.00.

They are good value for Myers vouchers and even okay for hotel accommodation.

As another example, you must spend $1100 at a Fly Buys outlet to get a $7 movie ticket which is .63%.
I would not spend $1100 at a fly buys outlet in 12 months and probably 2 years
I agree that Fly Buys is a bonus but just be carefull you are not paying more by shopping in an overpriced store.
Otherwise fly buys is a free bonus as you say.

Define "overpriced".

Meat at Coles might cost more than meat at Woolies, but that's because the Woolies meat is cough by comparison.

The Grace Bros brand has been so pathetically eroded over the past 15 years that it's hard to imagine much there can be overpriced.

Flybuys is a nice little side earner for us, as we get all of our groceries from the local Coles, most of our wine from the attached lickherland, and buy a lot of clothes, etc from Myer when in Melburg.

A recent survey by Money magazine found that prices at Coles and woolworths are the same. In fact for a selected basket of goods worth about $50, the difference was about a dollar and in some states Coles was cheaper. The article even explored the possibility of price fixing!!!
Having said that, I normally shop at Woollies as it is closer to my home.

Re: Grace Bros, I totally agree with Shillard. It is no more a premium store. You get inexpensive clothes imported from Asia. This is a problem that the mgmt is trying to address in differentiating Grace Bros, with so called poorer KMart and Target chains. Of course Grace has some brands that are expensive (CK underwear...), but then I am not after those!!!!!

Another point many do not know is that you can bargain (like you do in the Asian markets!) at Grace for Electricals and computers. Their policy
is to match any competitors prices as long as it is not below their cost price. I found them to be genuine in honouring the committment. Even if you have not got an ad or a brochure, they are happy to call the competitor's store.

Their sister store Megamart is even better. They will match even if it is below their cost. They guarantee low prices (if I remember correct) for four weeks even after you purchase.

But to get these prices, you need to do a good research to find the lowest price.

Sorry, I have strayed from the frequent flyer points to bargain shopping.


Kristo, I agree with you in the sense that it is hard to accumulate as only a few stores give FlyBuys. (You need to buy $50,000 groceries to get 10,000 points!!). But as I said, I normally wait for bonus offers from Grace Bros.
In addition to the trousers, if I had bought two shirts for 75 bucks, I would have got another 2500 points , but then I had bought some good shirts in Sri Lanka for much less prices last month.
