I booked a trans Canada hop Calgary-Toronto-St John's and return on the Air Canada site, with Australian resident selected (automatically). It was priced in A$ and all went OK.

I discovered that a friend was going to be in Toronto on the time of the return leg, so I called up to break the journey in Toronto, catching the same flight the next day. I knew there would be an additional charge, as it would no longer be a 'through fare'.

I was stunned to hear the AC agent say that, no I couldn't change the flight because it was paid in A$ and 'we are unable to do the conversion of the re-pricing'. Huh? Surely you can refer me up the chain - I must be able to change a flight, irrespective of the currency originally purchased. She assured me that no, it couldn't be changed because it was sold in A$ and they can't do the conversion to C$ but she would put me through to some-one else.

And there I hung on listening to music for 15 minutes before I gave up. HUCA - agent said yes, they could re-price, but would need to do a conversion somewhere else, and she transferred me - same phone black hole.

Third time lucky - and told it couldn't be done.

How bloody ridiculous - can't change a flight because it was sold in A$ !!

I'll try again when I hit Toronto on my way out to the east coast, but not hopeful.

HUACA surely... sounds like US airways agents to me.. Don't know what they are talking about :)

Update: At Toronto I asked at the MLL desk and they called someone who said, sorry, phone agents should know to transfer call to xx_XX (but I think they did - its just that no-one answered that line).

Cost to change flights was C$295 (cost difference between through fare and stop-over) plus C$50-odd change fee.

I'll see my mate another time!

Suggest you bring this up at Air Canada section of the Flyertalk forum. They may be able to help you.

I do go there from time to time, mostly to reply to queries about 'how do you do this in Australia ...'. But mostly I find its a pretty abusive environment. I think I'll give it a pass this time.

I've never been to AC forum but I have posted at AA, CX, SQ, QF, VA and I've never seen any abusive behaviour ... yet!
