Managing AA booking made with QF

Of course... Qantas call centre said Qantas doesn't own the ticket as AA has taken over the ticket. So I call AA and they say Qantas still owns the ticket and Qantas has to make any changes.

Back to Qantas and after 1hr they said 56mins is a fine transfer time as it's the same terminal and couldn't put me on another flight due to it being an award seat.
They said if I missed the flight I'd be put on another flight. Which I challenged them it's. E at least 12-24hrs later and I'd prefer to proactively not have that occur.

So I'll have to call again tonight to try and get another representative to book me another flight

… and couldn't put me on another flight due to it being an award seat.

Total rubbish isn’t it? Incompetence/ laziness. Which Call Centre, by the way?

Edit: Just re-read the post. All good

Unfortunately, being an AA operated flight, if there’s no award seats on any of the earlier flights - there’s actually not a lot QF can do. They can’t “release” more seats.

Technically they could purchase a seperate revenue ticket (they did that for me when QF SYD-SFO relaunch was pushed back a few months) but you’re potentially have another problem of not having luggage checked through.

As I typed this, another thing to consider is getting QF to release an award seat SFO-SYD (if it operates the day you travel)?

Also, I’d be checking myself if there’s AA or AS options out of SFO - even in whY (it’s a short flight).

Their response (after they kept having to "speak to the support team") was even though there was an Alaska Airways flight "because it was an award seat they couldn't move things". There were also 2 other AA flights with great times, but apparently they weren't feasible either.

I did tell Qantas I was happy to go down to Economy. But that didn't seem to help either.

Will see if a 3rd call will change the outcome!!

Can you see any award seats yourself online SFO-LAX? If not, that’s why they’re telling you that.

But if there are other options visible, self help would be to go to MMB and press “Change Flights” and see what’s available.

AA can release seats due to their own alterations, however finding a Qantas staff that knows this is likely the challenge with the call centre.

There's a script and this is slightly off the script.

After a 3rd call:
- Cannot book another airline as the original ticket is "SFO > SYD" with AA. It's just that this ticket stops in LAX. This also means I cannot cancel the SFO > LAX leg as it's the same ticket and that'd cancel the whole thing they've told me
- Flights the day after, and QF12 have no awards availability so Qantas said this isn't an option
- If I booked my own economy full fare AA ticket from SFO to LAX with a much more reasonable layover time AA would say I didn't show for the original SFO > LAX flight and cancel my whole ticket
- Apparently the "allowable layover time" at LAX is 40 minutes (the call centre looked this up somewhere to tell me this stat). "And as I have 56 minutes this is within the reasonable layover time so nothing needs to change as landing from SFO and take-off from LAX is all in the same terminal"
- I cannot see anywhere in my booking on the Qantas website where I can edit the booking to review other options. I only have a "Cancel" or "Call Qantas" option

I suppose my biggest concern is missing the LAX > SYD. Having to then go to a hotel, and AA rebooking me.
1. Does AA cover the hotel costs?
2. Will AA rebook me on a business seat? What if they too say there are no award Business seats in upcoming flights? Do they just have to open a normal Business seat for me because that is what I've booked?
3. It looks like all AA LAX to SYD flights go through Dallas lol... and that's where I'll have kinda just come from so that'll be a long few days in transit!

If you miss your connection, on the day of travel the booking is under airport control, with much more flexibility than reservations. The operating carrier (AA) should be able to move you to any available seat regardless of the fare class booked. The question of course is if there are available J seats, but AA will then have the option to use their interline agreements and move you to say QF (if QF has availability, of course).

If misconnect involves overnight then AA should also cover accomodation.
