Following from MEL_Traveller's comment on options being available, if you are tight on time and worried of delays breaking your connections, it'd be handy to scout out the alternate options beforehand, both for SFO and LAX departures, which can take you to your destination at an acceptable time. Then, in case of delays and a need to rebook, you ask the agent to look into those options in your order of preference.

We should find each other at SFO. I am on the exact same flight and have spent 2hrs on the phone to Qantas 3 separate times today to try and resolve this but they won't budge.
...
Big Red, I feel your pain. QF also stated they will not do anything as the MCT is 40 . I really can’t afford to be delayed by a further day into SYD if I miss the connection. I wonder if AA will just book us onto the next flight with J availability
Another option, which you will not know until the day, is to use Same Day standby for an earlier flight that day.

This is now USD60 OR FREE for oneworld status members (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald) on AA and you can be put on an earlier flight if there is a seat available. There is a pecking order here though and I am not sure how checked luggage is handled.

You would need to be airside an hour before the target flight - sometimes you can request at check in.
