So this is a thing. Having not used a "travel money card" before, it is effectively a prepaid debit card that earns points, is that about it? Didn't mention a cost I noticed.

Having already got 2 (possibly soon to be 3) Velocity cards, not sure why I'd need another, but I'm sure some people would have a use for it.

AirNZ have already introduced similar for their NZ resident members and QF are planning to as well.

Given it's it an effort by Velocity to increase revenue with Forex charges, arbitrage and the like, most AFF aficionados will steer well clear while sticking to their Citibank Debit and 28° cards ...

If the fees and charges are anything like Qantas or AirNZ's, this is very good advice.

Citibank Debit and 28° cards ...

Bingo! Whenever I have looked in to these travel money cards they seem hideously complicated and riddled with fees. Like when NAB destroyed the gold account and suggested we use their travel money card instead.

Citibank Plus + 28 degrees is absolutely the way to go...not an annual fee or monthly charge between them...I'll live without the Velocity points!

Just got the email about requesting my new card...

It's a bit of an ask, wanting people to put their hands up for this card before even announcing any details such as fees and charges, what currencies can be held on the card etc. The chance to win the Business Class fares to LA is tempting, but I'm also concerned about whether there might be an "inactivity fee" or the like (which is charged on a monthly basis by a number of the travel card providers if you haven't used the card for 12 months) if, for example, you activate the Global Wallet but don't load any money onto it. Although if there's no currency on the card, I guess they can't take a fee out! Or maybe there will be some proviso that once you activate the card, you MUST load money on to it. Too many "what ifs" at the moment.

I certainly don't see myself ever having a desire to use this, PDS or not.
A Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) will be available online at www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/globalwallet once card distribution commences in the coming months, for review and acceptance by any prospective cardholder before activating the card

I don't see the problem with applying for it given the statement in the email

"To replace your existing card and receive a new Velocity membership card with Global Wallet™ functionality, simply click on the request button below. It’s important to know that to use the Global Wallet™ functionality you must first activate your card, giving you complete control over if and when you decide to take advantage of this new feature."

Going into the draw only requires you to request the card.

I never get emails about this stuff from Velocity - despite making sure my preferences are set correctly :(

I haven't gotten the email but am interested in the card. Does the request button take you to a generic form to fill out or is it member specific? If its just a generic form, mind sharing the link?

I simply don't want a FF card with a VISA logo on it - activated or not!

(No real interest in a random draw either - prefer not to encourage Rêv Australia Pty Ltd ABN 91 117 378 953 AFSL 401610)

The T & Cs state that only VFF members who receive the email directly from Velocity are eligible to enter.

I got the email at around 1430 and signed up for the hell of it as it looks interesting. The way I look at it, once the PDS comes out and the card arrives if I don't like the terms (ie fees) then I simply won't activate the card.

1 out of 4 got the email here and that happened to be me, so I have requested it just for the chance of the flights.

Pretty much this!

28 degrees is a no brainer if you want to avoid a generally poor exchange rate and then a % commission...

Some Amex cards give you 2 points per $1 spent overseas... For me I value this at about 7-9cents per dollar spent and it covers the fees/currency conversion so I am happy enough to stick with this

As for the Virgin card, I doubt it will offer anything above what I am already getting, except maybe at launch

The card is a replacement Velocity card..... if you don't activate it. Which I probably wont. Looks nice though! :)

Why all the negativity about something we know nothing about?
