Hi guys,

I know I might as well be asking "how long is a piece of string", but how long would you advise allowing for transit at LAX?

We are flying business class on the A380 into TBIT arriving at 0715 (well supposed to). We are then flying to Vegas for a couple of nights, and were looking at getting some cheapies on SWA (probably) in Terminal 1. Would you advise spending a bit extra and getting a flexible fare for that flight? TIA.

Min - 2 hours and yes flexible flight will help as your incoming flight could be delayed.

I'd recommend 3 just to be on the safe side, 2 can leave you rushing, and given you can't check in to your hotel until around 2pm, there's no sense rushing and leaving it too tight.

Since you will be on separate tickets, neither Qantas nor South West are obliged to protect you if you miss the connecting flight. So it really doesn't matter what the MCT may be - its up to you to decide how much risk you are willing to take. You could choose the higher risk option of a 2 hour connection and be willing to purchase a new LAX-LAS ticket at walk-up prices if you miss the connection, or you could choose the other end of the scale and plan to stay at LAX overnight, or choose anywhere in between.

Great information - thanks very much! Will book for 3+ hours on a flexible ticket to save stressing about things I cannot change.

I've a flight of QF93 later this year with an onward AA flight on a separate booking to SFO in coach. My inbound is scheduled to arrive 7:30am; my onward flight is at 2:30pm. If I have a lot of spare time, I can always try to standby for an earlier flight ...
