Cons (and some pros) of overnight long haul flights

There is nothing like coming home. That is of course unless the flight getting you home happens to be a famed “red eye” or overnight flight. If you are lucky enough to be able to sleep on a plane then if may not be so bad. For some of our members however, the experience is something best avoided where possible. I’ve been looking for a way to get back from Asia without enduring the overnight return flight from Hong Kong, Manilla, Singapore or just about anywhere. I’ve used the Singapore 9:30am departure getting back to Brisbane at 1930. A nice way to complete a journey. Usually though I need to have a connection in from Philippines so it’s not so easy. Getting into a spin over baggage

Our members often muse about baggage, and what makes a good purchase. If you only travel once in a blue moon, spending good cash on a suitcase may not make sense. For instance, if you have looked closely at a Japanese tour group, you will not their baggage often looks similar. That’s because they often just rent a bag for that big trip, saving not only cash, but storage space back home. For the frequent traveller however, it is very much different story. When it comes to selection of a piece of luggage that will do the trick, the devil is often in the detail. I have always used 2-wheel “upright” type bags (both for larger checked bags and wheel/carry-on. However, most  more

Mistaken Fare Showdown: Flight Centre vs Singapore Airlines

With so many airlines currently flying to Australia, offering a variety of fares, sometimes it can be pretty hard to pick when a published fare is a mistake. Some two weeks ago, on a Saturday morning, Flight Centre staff did think they had found such a mistake fare. Doing the responsible thing, they let Singapore Airlines know that they thought there was a problem. When there was no confirmation, the decision was made to sell the fare. That’s when the problem really started to grow. The mistake fares in question are believed to be around half the normal fare in Business class to Europe. Since that fateful weekend, reports have emerged in the press of Singapore Airlines  more

Vancouver with Air Canada in Business

Come January, Qantas will once again serve Vancouver as a destination. The only other airline to operate a non-stop service from Australia on that route has been Air Canada. This week’s trip report has a look at that service, and how good it is at present, given the lack of competition. No so much a trip report, but brief recount of AC 34 Sydney-Vancouver in Business (and later, return journey AC33) as a benchmark for January Qantas service to Vancouver. I’ve done this trip a number of times and this one was pretty typical. AC and QF share a lot in common – both legacy carriers, on the pricy side with a tendency to uneven performance, but can be relied on for a  more
