Best Way to Exit Frequent Flyer programs

One Qantas Frequent Flyer member this week wants to close their account and exit the program. For this member the program was not delivering any value. In their view the rewards do not justify the annual fee for the QFF credit card, they find it hard to book flights and they resent being stung with taxes when flights are redeemed.

The first instinct of all devoted frequent flyers is to convince our member to stay. However, after they overcome the initial shock that someone wants to quit the program, they are only too happy to impart some advice as how to best burn the 260k accrued points our member has accrued.

The general consensus of all members is that using the points for flights or upgrades is by far the best value for money. Our members can work their point redeeming magic with some further details such geographical location and destination of choice.

However, if flying is not an option, our members do not recommend redeeming points for goods such as appliances. Our members suggested transferring the points to a “gift card”, such as the Woolworths wish card which they believe provides the best non-flight value. An alternative is to one off “gift” the points to a family member. If this option was taken up, our member may suddenly find themselves with a whole host of cousins!
