Virgin Australia is currently offering 30% off Velocity Reward Seats! The offer is available for Economy, Premium Economy and Business class reward seats booked using Velocity Frequent Flyer points. Both domestic and international Virgin Australia flights are included in the deal. Reward seats on Virgin Atlantic, Delta, Alitalia and Air New Zealand trans-Tasman flights are also being discounted!
The promotion runs until 28 February 2018, and is valid for travel between 15 March 2018 and 9 January 2019. The discount is automatically applied to eligible flights when booking on the Virgin Australia website or via the Velocity call centre.
The 30% discount applies to the number of points required for the reward seat. It does not apply to the taxes & charges payable in addition to the points. However, the good news is that Velocity does not impose fuel surcharges for bookings on Virgin Australia and most partner airlines.
If you have Flybuys points, you can even combine this offer with the 15% bonus points offer on transfers from Flybuys to Velocity!
Qantas has run similar promotions in the past. But the discount typically applies only to Economy bookings, and only for Qantas-operated flights (where high carrier surcharges are often payable). The fact that Virgin is offering 30% off Velocity reward seats both in Business class, and on some partner airlines, is a unique aspect to this promotion and a great deal!
The other good news is that Velocity award availability on domestic and most international routes is pretty good! But there are exceptions. Business class availability to Hong Kong and Los Angeles is extremely limited. Our members found only one flight to or from Los Angeles during the promo period with Business reward seats available.
But there is a reasonable amount of Premium Economy award availability to Los Angeles. At just 100,200 Velocity points and around $150 in taxes for return Premium Economy flights to the United States, that’s a fantastic deal!
If you’re looking for a good use of points, short domestic flights are currently a great deal at just 5,400 Velocity points in Economy or 10,800 points for Business class. Routes pricing at these levels include Melbourne-Sydney, Brisbane-Sydney, Launceston-Sydney, Perth-Kalgoorlie and Canberra-Brisbane. A330 Business class flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Perth are also good value at 24,800 Velocity points – down from the usual 35,500 points.
Delta and Virgin Atlantic flights between New York and London are also superb value. With 30% off Velocity awards, this route would cost just 34,600 Velocity points for Business class!
