In recent years, thanks to protest and coup activity, Bangkok has not been as popular a destination as it once was. Throw in a relatively new airport with different transport options, and when it comes to finding a place to sleep, a returning visitor may struggle to find the right solution.
Got two overnight stays in Bangkok coming up between flights and would be grateful any advice. Its been over 20 years since I was last there.
Going out, arriving at Bangkok fairly late and leaving about midday next day, so I’m looking at airport hotel and the Novotel there. I have Accor gold, better than nothing (but not much), but are there any airport alternatives? Comments on the Novotel? Coming back, arriving in the morning, out mid morning next day, so thought I’d head into town and AriyasomVilla has taken my fancy as a bit of a post-rushed-trip wind down. Anyone stayed there?
To get to the latter, I’m thinking of taking the Airport Train to a station near Makassan; its about 700m from the hotel; then getting a taxi. Would that be the go? OR for some-one who dislikes the hassle of airport transfers for just an overnight stay, should I look for a hotel very close to an Airport Train station? Such as?
The Accor chain has been very focused on developing hotels near airports, and like Auckland and Brisbane airports, Bangkok features a Novotel branded property onsite. After a long flight, many travellers are hesitant to endure another hour or so in a taxi or train. As a result most airport hotels charge high prices for what is often an average property. In the case of Bangkok however, it seems those prices are justified.
The Novotel is really quite nice as airport hotels go. Stayed there several times and it’s very convenient.
If the budget is tight, another alternative can be found often in the airport precinct. A budget style hotel offering not much more than a bed can easily be found. With many offering a short shuttle bus service, you are almost in your room as fast as an airport hotel, without paying for the privilege.
I just stayed in a cheapy near the airport that is fine for one night. Free pick up and drop off. But, I guess you’d rather the Novotel. It’s Mariya Boutique Hotel for 1500 THB.
For longer stays, or a better choice of options, there is no doubt downtown is going to be the best solution. Thanks to a shortage of rolling stock, last month the express train services were suspended, making it a slow alternative until they resume. Taking the cab and avoiding the peak hour seems to be the way to go.
With so many choices, each with their own pitfalls, the choice is not easy. Have you recently been to Bangkok for a short stay, why not have your say on what is the best solution HERE?
