Virgin Australia has today launched a brand new promotion on point transfers to Velocity Frequent Flyer. During the month-long promotion, you can earn a 15% Velocity point bonus when converting points from most Australian credit card rewards programs to Velocity. You’ll also earn bonus points when transferring points from Flybuys and many hotel loyalty programs to Velocity.
Velocity Frequent Flyer runs a similar month-long promotion every May and November. The current 15% Velocity point bonus promotion started today and runs until 30 November 2018.
Most Australian credit card rewards programs are participating in this month’s promo. This includes Amex Membership Rewards, ANZ Rewards, NAB Rewards, Diners Club, Citibank and Bank of Queensland. ANZ Rewards is even offering an extra 15% bonus points when transferring to Velocity, giving a total bonus of 30%. However, the CommBank Awards and St George Amplify programs are missing from the list. Westpac Altitude, which is devaluing its points next week, is also not participating.
You’ll also earn a 15% Velocity point bonus when transferring points to Velocity this month from many hotel loyalty programs. The list of participating hotel programs includes Marriott Rewards, Le Club, Hilton Honors, IHG Rewards Club, Choice Privileges and Shangri-La Golden Circle. In addition to the 15% bonus Velocity points, Shangri-La Golden Circle members can earn an extra 35% bonus (bringing the total bonus to 50%).
The Coles Flybuys program is also participating, meaning you’ll get around 1,000 Velocity points this month for every 2,000 Flybuys points. (Normally, 2,000 Flybuys points convert to 870 Velocity points.) But, unlike during the previous promotion, the annual transfer limit of 138,000 Flybuys points has not been removed.
Back in May 2018, Velocity offered up to 40% bonus points on transfers to the program.
This month, Velocity is also running an “Earnbassadors” promotion. With this, the airline is encouraging Velocity members to promote the frequent flyer program on social media. By doing so, members have the chance to win a share of 2 million Velocity points. Individual prizes range from 1,000 to 100,000 Velocity points, and there are 165 total prizes up for grabs.
Although this is a good deal, we generally recommend that you only transfer points to any frequent flyer program if you have a particular redemption in mind. Transfers cannot be reversed and Velocity points will expire after 2 years if your account is inactive.
You can redeem Velocity points for Virgin Australia flights and upgrades, as well as reward seats on 13 partner airlines. You can also transfer Velocity points to the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer program, although transfers to KrisFlyer will become more expensive from 1 January 2019.
