Are Qantas points a valuable currency, or is the point chase futile because free reward travel is out of reach?
The high cost of frequent flyer rewards tickets, combined with excessive fuel surcharges have led some members to claim that Qantas points are in fact worth very little. Firstly, they argue that other programs including Virgin Velocity charge both fewer points and lower taxes for redemption flights. Secondly, some members complain that Qantas points are too difficult to use. International upgrades are considered a lottery, and reward flights can be as rare as hen’s teeth. One member also believes that the recent loss of two major partners – Optus and Woolworths – makes it increasingly difficult to earn Qantas points on the ground.
However, other members believe wholeheartedly that Qantas points remain a valuable currency. Points cost nothing to earn, and our members have redeemed them for some incredible travel experiences! It is easy to redeem points for domestic flights and upgrades and despite limited availability, international rewards remain within reach. Qantas also offer a variety of other ways to redeem points, so those not wanting to fly can spend their points on things like hotels and supermarket vouchers. And compared to most other programs, it is very easy to accumulate Qantas points in Australia through everyday activities.
