This week, Australia said farewell to a national icon. Over the past 49 years, Qantas has operated almost every variant of the Boeing 747 in existence. In fact, the flying kangaroo was once an all-747 airline. Now, the queen of the skies has been placed into early retirement in the Mojave desert.
The iconic Boeing 747 has set records, made travel affordable for more people, and transported millions of passengers to destinations all over the world. This includes everyone from Olympic athletes to stranded Australians returning home from disaster epicentres – many years ago from Darwin after Cyclone Tracy, and most recently from Wuhan.
Despite the current pandemic, Qantas has managed to put on three excellent final joy flights in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra for fans of the Boeing 747. In Episode 41 of the AFF on AIR podcast, Matt speaks to some of the passengers that were on board the last ever Qantas 747 passenger flight out of Canberra on 17 July 2020.
