Podcast #50: Earning Points for Paying Tax

Podcast #50: Earning Points for Paying Tax
By paying tax by credit card, cove has been able to travel the world in the luxury of Singapore Airlines Suites

Since the Australian Tax Office began accepting credit card payments in 2009, AFF member cove and his family have earned 100 million frequent flyer points by paying tax bills they had to pay anyway. Those points have allowed his family to travel the world in luxury ever since. Who knew paying tax could be so rewarding?!

In Episode 50 of the AFF on AIR podcast, cove tells Matt how he managed to earn so many frequent flyer points. It’s a great story about the value of frequent flyer programs and credit cards!

Sadly, the banks have slowly been cracking down on this tax loophole over the last 11 years. One by one, like dominoes, Australia’s major banks have excluded government payments from earning points. Finally, next week, St George will become the final major Australian bank to do so. But as you’ll find out in this podcast, there are still plenty of opportunities to earn points for paying tax in the future – even if they aren’t quite as lucrative as before.

Also in this episode, Qantas Frequent Flyer has just launched a brand new status match & status extension offers. And Virgin Australia is finally out of voluntary administration, so what’s next for Australia’s second-largest airline?
