It’s no secret that many Australian Frequent Flyer members love their wine… in case there was any doubt, look no further than the busy AFF wine forums!
The two hobbies – flying and drinking wine – are more complementary than first meets the eye. Of course, many frequent flyers enjoy a glass of wine in the lounge, in the air or while on holiday. But did you know that by buying wine strategically, you could also earn stacks of frequent flyer points to bring you closer to your next flight reward?
Here are five easy ways to earn frequent flyer points when buying wine in Australia…

Qantas Wine
When making purchases from Qantas Wine, the airline’s online wine retailer, you can always earn at least 1 Qantas point per dollar spent – or more if you’re a Qantas Wine Premium member. But the real value is in the generous Qantas Wine bonus points offers.
You could easily earn up to 20,000 Qantas points – more than enough for a return Economy Class flight or a one-way Business Class flight from Sydney to Melbourne – by buying just a single case of wine!
A “par” bonus points wine offer from Qantas Wine would be 10,000 bonus Qantas points for a case of wine costing around $300. But you can sometimes get even better offers, such as 18,000 points with a case of wine costing $354.
Some past offers have even come with 25,000 bonus points – more than enough for a one-way Economy Class ticket from Australia to Bali.
To put the value into perspective, you would need to spend $645 to get 20,000 top-up points from Qantas Frequent Flyer. That’s without getting any wine!
These offers can change any time and are updated regularly. So if you can’t find an offer you like this week, just have another look next week. The offers tend to change around the start of each week.

Virgin Wines
If you’d prefer to earn Velocity Frequent Flyer points when buying wine online for home delivery, one option is Virgin Wines.
With Virgin Wines, you can earn 2 Velocity points for every dollar spent (or 3 points per dollar if you’re a Discovery Club member).
If you’re a new customer and join the Discovery Club, you can also access some great introductory offers which often include discounted wine, freebies and bonus Velocity points. For example, with the current offer, you could get a case of 12 wines, two crystal stemless glasses and two extra bottles of Cabernet for $107.88. (See the Virgin Wines website for details.)
If you take up this offer and don’t want regular wine deliveries, just make sure you cancel your Discovery Club membership before the next case is sent in around 12 weeks.
Velocity Wine Store by Laithwaites
You can also earn (or redeem) Velocity points with the Velocity Wine Store by Laithwaites.
Like Qantas Wine, the Velocity Wine Store also has regular bonus points offers on cases of wine. A typical offer is between 5,000 and 10,000 Velocity points on a dozen bottles.
In addition to any bonus points, you can earn 2 Velocity points per $1 spent at the Velocity Wine Store by Laithwaites.
Earn Everyday Rewards points at BWS
If you prefer to buy your wine from a physical store, there are also ways to earn frequent flyer points with traditional retailers like BWS.
You can earn 1 Everyday Rewards point per $1 spent at BWS. Everyday Rewards is the loyalty program of Woolworths, and points can be converted to Qantas points at a rate of 2,000 Everyday Rewards = 1,000 Qantas points.
While this just gives you a base earn rate of 0.5 Qantas points per $1 spent, Everyday Rewards also sends regular targeted offers by email. Here’s one example of an Everyday Rewards bonus points offer for buying alcohol from BWS:
Earn Flybuys points at Liquorland & First Choice Liquor Market
Similarly, you can earn 1 Flybuys point per $1 spent at retailers including Liquorland and First Choice Liquor Market. Plus, Flybuys also sends regular bonus points offers which allow you to accumulate points a lot more quickly!
Flybuys points can be transferred to Velocity Frequent Flyer, with 1,000 Flybuys points converting to 500 Velocity points.
