For an airport serving a city of less than half a million, Canberra Airport punches above its weight.
In my personal (and perhaps slightly biased) opinion, it’s the nicest airport in Australia with its modern, spacious facilities, excellent Qantas & Virgin lounges, and its (usually) short lines for security. The airport also boasts direct flights to 14 domestic destinations and will soon receive daily Qatar Airways flights to Doha.
For a medium-sized airport’s social media account, the Canberra Airport Facebook page is also refreshingly excellent.
Most airports use their Facebook pages to announce new airlines flying to the airport, to advertise or to post announcements about delays or airport disruptions. You know, the usual stuff.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and Canberra Airport’s Facebook page does all of these things as well. But the moderators clearly have a sense of humour and a licence to have a lot of fun with the page, too. The content is interesting, likeable and shareable – perfect for increasing engagement.
Even if you don’t live in Canberra and have never flown to that airport, if you’re an aviation geek, you’ll probably enjoy this Facebook page!
The page provides detailed weather updates…
Friendly reminders for aircraft owners…
Well-captioned photos…
Information about aircraft which (may or may not be in any way accurate)…
And even compliments…
As an added bonus, Canberra Airport responds very quickly to messages sent on its Facebook page.
This would surely make a great case study into how to run an airport social media page. By the way, the airport’s Twitter page is also just as good (and clearly run by the same people).
