Just noted on AmEx website that platiinum travel insurance now covers you, your spouse and dependents when TRAVEL IS PAID FOR ON PLATINUM CARD. If this is true it is a major devaluation of this cover. I note however that the terms and conditions linked on the page date back to 2010 and still say cover is activated merely by being a platinum card holder.

Anyone else noticed this change? I am aware of recent changes to UK plat travel insurance cover.

Are you looking at Credit or Charge card? AFAIK the play credit card has always been that way, whereas the charge card (the one that is very worthwhile) was not.

In any event, in the case of conflict the T&Cs should prevail over web site.

Charge card - was curious given the changes to the T & C's for the UK charge card insurance.
Hoping there is not an impending change to the T&C's for the Aus platinum card.

I was just looking into this... found this on the Platinum site.

If this change has actually occured then I will be ringing and cancelling my card, and expecting a refund of my $900 fee.

The travel insurance was the major factor in me getting this card, and as I travel for work and have to book through the work nominated travel agency, there is no way that I can pay for the travel on my Amex.

Also, they would have to notify me in writing of the changes to the T&Cs, they can't just update the website and think that it takes effect on existing customers.

I always assumed you yourself were covered but to bring family in you needed to pay for the trip with your card?

This has been covered extensively in previous threads.
Family are covered even if travelling without you and whether or not you pay for the travel on the card.

However, the website changes are a concern and if true then I want my money back too! I can get the same insurance product with my 'free for life' Citi plat card or a host of other cards.

I have my original T&C which I could rely on in a dispute and so far, I have not received a new booklet.
But I don't want to be fighting with them AFTER I get capped in a drive-by in the Bronx.

Phone call or email required

Re: AMEX Charge Platinum travel insurance... kids covered when traveling on their own [/h] Just called the insurer - ACE Assistance on +61 2 9335 3492
They confirmed the kids - provided they fit the definition of "Dependent Child" below have the same level of cover as I do, doesn't matter if they are travelling with me or on their own...

Dependent Child means the American Express Platinum Card member’s legally
dependent child up to and including the age of twenty-four (24), including a
stepchild or legally adopted child, who is wholly dependent on the American Express
Platinum Card member for financial support.

Note the same is true for your spouse, so there's no need for him/her neither to travel with you nor to be a supplementary cardholder in order to be covered by travel insurance...

UK domicile cards have a different master policy and thus does not affect our ones in Australia.
The current T&C can be obtained online and the last updated date was 2010.

Travel insurance is activated by simply being a card member.
So simply it's not true (as at today) that we only get covered when we purchase our travel on the platinum charge card.
I suspect the sentence was uploaded to get more transaction fees lol....

Taken from this website https://www.americanexpress.com/australia/microsite/the-platinum-card.shtml#sub6

If that is true I'll dump the card quick smart.

Just called AMEX and spoke to ACE.
They confirmed that yes you do need to now pay for ENTIRE trip on your card to get insurnace.
This will start in June(I think she said the 10th)
All travel up to then is covered under the old arrangment.

So yes a massive devalu of the card.

If, and when, I get notified, I will be cancelling the charge card. I have a lot of travel booked for post June, which I did not pay on the charge card

Just got off the phone with Ace Insurance and was told this will come into effect 15th June 2012. He mentioned airfares needed to be purchased to activate the insurance and card members will be receiving confirmation of this and other changes in the next 2-3 weeks from Amex.

I was told this new change off the record last week.
its not good at all
I certainly will not keep my $900 card after june
they need to at least cove anyone who purchased or received an award ticket before june for travel after june

even if we have to send in our itineries and get them registered.
I have just recommended a client buy the $900 card for the insurance for her and her daughter.
she is on a gifted award so will she be covered??
leaves Australia mid june.
they need to let us know all this.

I just spoke to Amex before and it seems the operators are well aware of the changes. He said they would refund the $900.

Id suggest everyone ring up and complain. Whether it makes the change or not remains to be seen..

Personally the card it worth half as much now. If that..

Before travel insurance became fully covered regardless if you use the card or not, you only need to spend a minimum of $100 on any on your trip (airfares or accommodation or tour) to have it covered. If it just reverted back to the old policy, it won't be that bad.

If it's anything like it has been over here in the UK, anything booked/paid for before that period, regardless of how you paid, is still covered under the existing terms so no problems there.

It's a nice exit strategy for those of us (incl me) who have gotten the 80,000 MR Points for getting the Plat Charge Card 2 months ago. Big change in Terms & Conditions is a valid point for cancellation and AMEX can't say you only applied for the card with the intention to cancel and only receive the points. :)
