Thought I'd just share the current qantas sale with people from Australia

Something silly has happened to fares ex-akl on QF to USA

AKL-LAX J - 3499 NZD return (19/9 - 30/11 and 1/1 - 30/6)
AKL-SFO J - 4799 NZD
AKL-JFK J - 6099 NZD

guess AA and UA entering the AKL market has made things a little more competitive

seems that you need to fly the QF codeshare on AA metal.... but i can't find any availability on QF.com

That AKL-LAX price is extremely sharp, great find if indeed it's available via other sources.

You can price it on Google Flights and book it via AA.com. Even same day returns.

Great find! It's a shame the aircraft info isn't available.

AA is running their B787-8 on the AKL route.

Both QF and AA have the same fare published. You cannot route trans-tasman back via AU. You can only take the AA AKL-LAX service but it's available as a QF codeshare for those crediting to QFF.

The sale ends 05/09.

Air NZ has also matched the higher of the two fares at 3842 NZD base fare.

Thanks for the heads up! I was able to get UA to price out including NZ flights. Might be to actually go home for Xmas

Seems you can route via SYD. Earns 520 SC if you go via SYD which isn't a bad $/SC earn for NZD$3499. Can't see this on QF.co.nz as people have already said, but I'm sure it's bookable if you call QF and they don't get sold while you wait an hour on hold...

Non-refundable according to fare conditions (but Expedia is saying cancellation possible with NZD$800 fee. Changes NZD$50 + fare difference pre-departure, NZD$100 + fare difference post-departure.

Cant find anything in Feb.

Year round pretty much. There just needs to be I class availability on either the SYD-LAX AA flight or the AKL-LAX AA flight.

It appears to be possible to do AKL-SYD <stop> SYD-LAX-SYD-AKL for those who want to use the AKL-SYD as a return from NZ.

Were you able to get it to price with a stop? Whenever I price the stop, the fare shoots up $1000! Same fare basis, but $1000 more.

I eventually figured out that the HIP rule applies to this fare so even though the fare allows a stopover for free, in actual effect you can't stopover without the fare shooting up.

I've now found out that the AA codeshares operated by QF do work on this fare, despite the fare rules saying AA metal only.

Works:

AA82/83 AKL/LAX
AA72/73 SYD/LAX
QF15/16 as AA code BNE/LAX
QF17/18 as AA code SYD/LAX – only runs sporadically during christmas
QF95/96 as AA code MEL/LAX – only runs twice a week

Doesn't work:

QF11/12 as AA code SYD/LAX
QF93/94 as AA code MEL/LAX

That's a cracker. All I need is to match it with a F Akl - Aust deal ! Poochie would love that !

Great tip AFFers.

i was asked by some friends in Melbourne to help plan two trips, one of which was USA in Feb/Mar. They ended up buying the code share last night, now squeezing in 3 days in Auckland on the outbound to meet the AKL-LAX return. Paid A$6800+ for 2 J class and are pleased. Next up Qantas to Bangkok, then a Finnair J to AMS over late Dec/Jan, we will get that sorted today.

Cheers
BF

Great. Thanks for clearing that up! It was driving me crackers trying to work it out.

Thanks for that. So no A380 QF Flights :( Also I'm assuming you can't get off with luggage in SYD on the way back to Auckland and just not go on the flight to AKL on the return?

Looks like a moot point as I don't seem to be able to find a fare using AA codeshare on QF metal bookable from anywhere.

What dates and flights? I might be able to price it in the GDS for you.
