Just having a closer look at the AMEX Velocity Escape Card comparing against some other AMEX productsand noticed something interesting.

  • 3 Velocity Points per dollar spent at[SUP]2[/SUP]
    - Virgin Australia
    - Tens of thousands of restaurants in Australia
  • 2 Velocity Points per dollar spent at[SUP]2[/SUP]
    - Airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators paid directly or through travel agencies
    - Spend in foreign currency when overseas and online
  • 1 Velocity Point per dollar spent[SUP]2[/SUP]
    - All other providers, excluding those below
    - Insurances offered by American Express
  • 0.5 Velocity Points per dollar spent[SUP]2[/SUP]
    - Utilities which are gas, water and electricity providers
    - Insurance offered by companies other than American Express
    - Telecommunication providers which includes goods and services purchased from phone, mobile and internet service providers
    - Government bodies including the Australian Taxation Office, Australia Post, federal/state and local government bodies

So from reading that is would seem that for utilities, insurance, telecommunication, government bodies including the ATO the AMEX Velocity Escape Card will earn you 1 point per dollar whilst the AMEX Velocity Plat card only earns .5 per dollar. Can anyone confirm if that's correct? If so, seems it would be handy to have this card in your wallet for decent earn rate from certain payments considering there is $0 annual fee. :cool: :cool:


 
Its hard to sell this card when the velocity platinum amex has a sign up bonus almost 8 times higher.

There is a lower income requirement and with no annual fee, what do you have to lose?? Even if you currently hold an AMEX product, many people report that they get the sign-up bonuses anyway so if you apply and get the 15k points then great, if you don't it's cost you nothing and then has a better earn rate than the Velocity plat card for some purchases as outlined above....

On the Amex website 'key facts sheet' it says up to 44 days..

On my Velocity Plat Amex, for example I received a statement on the 13/7/15 for all transactions between 11/6/15 and 12/7/15. This statement needs to be paid in full by the 26/7/15 to avoid interest charges so I suppose you could call that 'up to' 44 days interest free (from 11/6 to 26/7).

Thanks - I have the VA Plat also which I'm planning to ditch at renewal if they don't waive the fee, the due date/late payment fee rules are a bit harsher than with other Amex cards (ie the fee and full interest charge comes on immediately at the due date with no grace period)
 
I've tried to get the Velocity Plat fee waived a few times to no avail.

I religiously pay this one a couple of days early to make sure there's no stick from AMEX..
 
I already have this and as it's fee free it's my keeper card whilst the others get approved and cancelled 9 months later unless there is a fee wavier. I still got the AMEX plat recently too with the much bigger points bonus.

Did you get the sign-on bonus from both cards whilst holding simultaneously? Many people are reporting they do.

Just got this and it's the perfect entry-level card, particularly if you don't earn enough for the big Amex Plat, or just don't want to pay an annual fee. 2x points on VA spend is pretty good, too.

Before you go further, you should consider whether to take up the Velocity Escape Card, or the Velocity Platinum Card.

If you just want a basic card to earn Velocity points with NO ANNUAL FEE, or not qualified for the Platinum card, then the American Express Velocity Escape Card is for you. You get a bonus 15000 Velocity points courtesy from American Express.

However, if you are qualified for the Platinum Card, then you should seriously consider the American Express Velocity Platinum Card. This card is still the best offer for Velocity points bonus out there. To sum it up:

80000 bonus Velocity points + Free Virgin Australia domestic flight + 2 Virgin Australia Lounge Passes + Travel Insurance for only $349 annual fee.

The free domestic flight covers most (if not more) of the annual fee already. Most important of all, 80000 bonus Velocity points can be converted to 59259 Singapore Krisflyer miles. It can get you award ticket on Singapore Airlines (as an example):
