IIRC: I have seen reference to this acronym on a number of threads but can't find any reference to it's meaning including the Abbreviation Sticky... (assuming it is an acronym)

Can somebody please explain:confused:

And this is the stupid thing about using acronyms with multiple meanings. It gets too confusing understanding the context

If I read correctly
If I recall correctly
If I remember correctly
If I recollect correctly
If I really cared
If it really counts
Is Italy Roman Catholic?

IMHO, each to their own - I will continue to employ common acronyms, including IIRC.

YMMV!

They all vaguely mean the same thing except the last three IIRC :D

Such as?

TT?

Tiger?
Trans-Tasman?

TA?

Travel Agent?
Trans-Atlantic

It gets confusing when people start using acronyms for everything just for the sake of using an acronym. Most times is just as easy to type it out.

YMMV!

Yeah but then I'd have to get a real computer out, instead of using my phone, to type things easily.

FWIW I tend to spell out Trans-Tasman due to that possible confusion.

I have never seen TA stand for Trans-Atlantic (TATL is more conventional).

Most acronyms that could cause confusion should be able to be understood based on context.

I agree that purely acronyms for acronyms sake is pointless, but they have their place. Just as language contractions and text speak can be useful when you only have 159 characters to play with.

Exactly!

In general the specific intended meaning of an acronym is indicated by the topic along with where and how it is used.

In those few rare situations where it's possible this may not be obvious the author needs to consider being clearer, maybe avoiding acronymical use in such circumstance.

Trans-Tarman , a council road layer that eats a lot of trans fat laced fast food ;)

My mistake!

Now corrected, but I do like your definition ;) :D

What did I say about acronyms for acronyms sake. I have also seen TP used.

Not always.

So we don't have to worry about character limits on AFF? Just as well text speak has not found it's way to AFF. It is so difficult to read.
