When travelling the US we often use Hampton Inns especially in smaller towns.Basically everyone gets the same-free internet, breakfast and a paper. If an elite Hhonors member you get 2 bottles of water plus a snack or 100hhonors points. Most really do not have upgrades but Hhonors members at least get a room on side away from highway(most are beside a major road).
Certainly no expectations on this trip having fallen from diamond to gold. But at the HI Colton got a suite upgrade when the rate paid was just under $A60.Sure it was in a terrible area but safe. The staff were fantastic and extremely helpful.they have driving directions printed out for local restaurants, shops and attractions. So here is the suite-

You get breakfast which is billed as a hot breakfast but usually not great hot items. Here though had scambled eggs, sausage and potatoes as well as a waffle maker. We picked this as basically equidistant between 2 good factory outlet malls but ended up pretty happy with the stay at an excellent price.
The second HI was at Jonesbro,AK.Unfortunately as we were to find out later in a dry county. The floor map on the back of our room door showed 4 rooms much larger than all the others-we were in one of these. So 2 for 2 upgrades at Hamptons-never acheived that as diamond!
Once again the same selection of hot items-maybe Hampton has upped their standard.here though a good selection of cereals, fruit and fruit juices-in fact a much better breakfast than the full service Hilton we stayed in the night before.Once again we were very satisfied with the stay.
As I said at Hamptons basically everyone gets the same bennies. The price is usually good so a good choice for anyone driving the US outside the big cities.

Holiday Inn/HI Express (gloablly) have just had a major revamp so I wonder if they're keeping up with the competition (in terms of breakfast etc).

The hotels sound fine, the locations, not so much.:)

Nice reviews! I don't think the breakfast is new though - I've had the same spread (fruit, cereal, waffles, hot stuff) for the past 2 years from coast to coast.

To me Holiday Inn's and Holiday Inn Expresses don't have the same appeal. I have stayed at many Hampton Inn's across the US and Canada and the one thing I like about the chain is the consistency, something Holiday Inn seriously lacks.
