When driving through the USA HGIs are our preferred accommodation. In fact in general we would rather stay at an HGI in the burbs than stay in a major hotel downtown.saying that however we have been travelling frequently to the States for over 30 years now so have done most of the CBD touristy things.
At the HGI everybody gets a room of good size-if you look at the floor plans there are some rooms that appear a little larger-these are the 2 queen bed rooms, the slightly smaller ones are the king bedded rooms.Unfortunately in the newer HGIs the king bedded rooms come with a shower only.if you want a tub you have to go for the double queen rooms.Everybody gets free internet.as far as i am aware all have a pool(often indoors) and a small gym.
As a gold or plat hhonors member you get a complimentary full breakfast and 2 bottles of water. So basically I see no difference having dropped to gold. There are sometimes suites in HGIs but in 7 years as diamond we only scored this once.
the other reason for staying is that there is a guest laundry where your washing can be done cheaply.
So on this trip we stayed ay-HGI Oakbrook terrace.A few miles south of ORD.A hilton next door if you are in to mattress runs.Pleasant outlook and close to shops and restaurants.picked because not far from Aurora mills factory outlets.$US89.
HGI Napa.Very full as Labor day Weekend so also expensive-$US207-but still much cheaper than other Hilton or SPG properties in the area. Was noisy as a couple of large young groups. For breakfast they have a lot of Mexican choices on top of the usual eggs, omellettes etc.Service was the least impressive of the 6 HGIs we stayed at but definitely though the busiest.good location for touring the Napa valley.
HGI Little Rock North.$US105.Again a good location convenient to shops and restaurants.Staff here were a little disorganised.TV didnt work-rang front desk before we went out.Came back 2 hours later and nothing done so i dragged the heavy furniture out to find it had been unplugged. At breakfast you had to ask for things to be replenished, glasses for the juice etc.Second day we got back to the room at 1630 and it had not been serviced-told it was because we had the Do not disturb sign out-no we didn't and someone had been in the room as Air con had been switched on.went out for dinner and room was being serviced when we got back 2.5 hours later.
HGI Bentonville.$US95.Wanted to try the Aloft but it was over $200.This was a standard HGI.
HGI Clarksville,TN.A brand new HGI.Staff here were very good and a great example of southern hospitality.$US110.
HGI Grapevine/DFW West.Very close to DFW and they have a shuttle. In the same grounds are a Joes Crab shack and a BBQ restaurant.Again very new and again very good and helpful staff.$US105.
So if you are driving the USA HGIs are well worth considering.

Interesting to hear your views. Except for Orlando and SFO airport, my main experience with HGIs as actually been right in the heart of NYC. Three different HGIs, and each of them very good and thoroughly recommended. In fact I much preferred them to my single Hilton NYC stay, which I think is a big impersonal factory hotel. Or in other words, you don't have to be driving the USA to consider HGI's, downtown the are good alternatives as well. [rider: obviously in midtown manhattan they do not come with pools, but if lucky views of the ES Building instead]

I stayed at the HGI in Washington DC on my last DONE4. Good hotel and good service (except for one slightly coughy on the desk, but hey, that's the USA).

Which is your preferred NYC location? I've done the one on 35th St but booked in to the Times Square location at the end of Oct which I'm not too sure about? And again at JFK. Any advice? Thanks!

Have stayed the JFK one. Was doing the HGI Tribeca (brand new) but was Fashion Week so US$300+ (ended up cancelling when I got a Priceline deal for $200).

HGI JFK
Free shuttle bus from Colombus Circle (buses shared with Sheraton which is next door).
Free shuttle bus in mornings to your Terminal.
Decent enough hotel near JFK. Quick Internet and reasonably comfortable bed.
(apparently often available on priceline as well). Rooms dated but reasonable.
Ate out with a friend in Long Island and breakfasted at the AA Flagship T8 so can't comment on food, but a pretty small bar near the foyer.

All good. I liked 35th St (great location, and had amazing view out the window of the ESB). Times Square, whilst not exactly on time square was very close to it and in an area with lots of action, had views to the river. The other one was HGI Chelsea and again good, but different location in the garment district. Hard to say one was better than the other, but 35th St was brand new which made it edge out Times Square with its older decor.
