Currently being in Tassie, I have to say that the hardest thing we've found about a trip here is trying to book accommodation.

The major chains are not represented, but there is a swathe of alternate accommodation choices, however, how does one pick the gems from the overpriced cons?

Please feel free to add any you might so desire, and I'll add a bit on each of our choices (choice being a somewhat of a "coined phrase" as we left it way to late to book with Easter fast approaching).

Please remember, any information you choose to share, will help many others, just like us, to make wise choices.

George Town - Peppers York Cove

Accommodation - Peppers York Cove
Where - George Town
What - 2 bedroom apartment
Price - $206/night (Mantra sale rate)

My wife's comment upon entering the apartment was simple. "The bar has been set high for the rest".

Of course she was right ......the place was very nice, very spacious and had everything one might want. It was 2 bedroom and both were very similar, that is, no master bedroom or second bedroom. Great for two couples as there is no argument as to who is getting the master, they're the same including two identical ensuites.

The beds were very comfortable and warm, the furnishings were tasteful yet comfortable, the balcony was large, it had a laundry and big useable kitchen.

The view was just spectacular and very serene and Peppers is a comfortable drive from Launceston airport for a first night. Of course Low Head is just up the road with the penguins and some nice walks.

The restaurant menu was not overly extensive, but our meals were absolutely excellent and the pre-dinner drinks in the lounge were well received (after 12 and a 1/2 hours of travelling to get there and they were surprisingly well priced (circa $6 - $8). The restaurant is housed in the refurbished "Devil Cat" terminal so the views are absolutely magnificent.

Hobart - Somerset On The Pier

Accommodation - Somerset On The Pier
Where - Hobart
What - 1 bedroom + loft apartment
Price - $350/night (approximately)

Absolutely perfect location. We did have alternate accommodation booked (Sullivans Cove Apartments) but it was too unknown as to what or where it would be so we switched to Somerset. The rooms are smaller than those at Sullivans, however the location is perfect and the apartment size is not a problem. Galley style kitchen, downstairs bathroom with laundry, lounge and balcony (albeit tiny balcony). Upstairs is a shared/ensuite bathroom with bedroom plus 2 x single beds on the loft area. Parking is available for free, but the spots are limited and not guaranteed, however there does seem to be an ample amount of on-street paid parking available (may change during busy times). Apartment pics will have to wait but here's the view.

Yes, not having major chains represented is an issue for visitors wanting to 'book and forget'.

For the places around the island, price is usually a good guide to quality/experience (always exceptions though).

There are a couple of hotels under construction in Hobart at the moment (mid-high end) and a couple more planned. I think Sheraton is tipped to operate one of the planned ones.

Hi RooFlyer. The thing that we really found difficult was finding accommodation. I tried Rocket (that was rubbish, more expensive for the same accommodation and the search by area function was not intuitive), Stayz, Wotif, chains (ie, Best Western etc), but given the lack of big name players, we had decided we would try to stay in special type accommodation but had trouble finding it...places like farm stays, quaint B&Bs (that wasn't just some old house with a bed in a spare room) or historic buildings with a story to tell.

We passed two such places at Low Head (The Pilot Station and the Low Head lighthouse accommodation). We would have loved to stay in places like that, but we couldn't find them on-line. We really wanted to stay around the Bicheno area, but the only place that was available for the 4 nights we wanted was $500+ a night and it didn't look anything special so we've booked a place in LST and we'll make that a base to explore. Despite people saying LST is not worth staying at, we'll use that as a base to do day trips (Cradle Mountain, North West coast, North East coast, etc). As such, our planned trip has been cast out the window (figuratively speaking, of course we don't litter ;)) and we're just making it up as we go..........wineries have so far featured prominently :D. Anyway, just thought this thread, with the input of many, may make the accommodation hunt in Tassie just a little easier!

Hobart - Salamanca Inn

Accommodation - Salamanca Inn
Where - Salamanca/Battery Point Hobart
What - All suite hotel
Price - from $190/night (about the lowest rate & dependant on season etc)

This is one of my favourite hotels in Hobart. It has been fully renovated with quality Tasmanian made furniture (leather/blackwood etc). If we need a night in town for any reason this is the first price I check. The hotel itself has very good rates - probably better that the Hotels.com type websites, and I'm sure would price match anyway. http://www.salamancainn.com.au/

Big rooms, comfortable beds, reasonable sized kitchen and great bathroom. The tip-over factor for me is the brilliant location - just a spit from Salamanca with all the restaurants and the markets on Saturday, plus free and easily accessible parking underneath in an area notoriously difficult to find longer term parking. A good restaurant attached but Salamanca is only 20m away.

Re: Hobart - Salamanca Inn

I have booked Rydges Hobart for an upcoming visit to Tassie.
Just over $100/nite ($109?) inc breakfast.

Not sure what the room will be like but overall I'm satisfied with other Rydges properties I have stayed at.
As a Diamond, Hilton is my first choice and Rydges my second.

WARNING!
This is NOT a typical Rydges. I've stayed there twice as platinum and once even been upgraded to their top tier room. This is at most 3* hotel and I'm being VERY generous here. It's dated, dirty and service very poor.

There are much better options in Hobart at similar price range. I've recently booked RACV hotel for $124 p/night for stay in June.

Re: Hobart - Salamanca Inn

Probably the best site to see almost all accommodation and activity options is Tourism Tasmania
Home - Discover Tasmania

Note also that Trip Advisor doesn't work here as in most other places. The hotel rankings for Hobart is nothing short of bizarre.
