Gday

Got the email an hour ago. Program changes from 10th June 2017. To be honest i cant work out if it is for better or worse. It looks like they are following Krisflyer and getting rid of fuel surcharge(except for the UK market) but i cannot seem to find a complete miles matrix showing new miles required. Also infant redemption's will now be available at a reduced points cost. It will all come out in the wash.

Based on your feedback, we are making improvements to your customer experience with Malaysia Airlines. The first is our new Reservation System on 10 June 2017. A new website and app will also go live in September 2017 and all Golden Lounges will be refurbished in 2017 with the Kuala Lumpur Regional Lounge reopening in August 2017.
We are making several changes to the Enrich Programme which include flight redemptions and upgrades on Malaysia Airlines operated flights and our partner airlines.
The updates include:

 • Flight redemption on Malaysia Airlines operated flights will no longer be based on fixed Award Miles.
 • You will now enjoy greater flexibility when selecting your Award ticket, as the miles required for redemption will be tied to fares and vary according to seat availability, passenger demand and seasonality.
 • You can choose to redeem either in full miles or part miles and cash for your flights.
 • You will no longer pay cash for fuel surcharges for Award Tickets for applicable markets.
 • Enjoy lower miles for child Award Ticket as it will be based on child fare.
 • Infant Award Ticket will be available for redemption on Malaysia Airlines operated flights based on infant fares.
 • Miles & Cash redemption will be available online on enrich.malaysiaairlines.com, via our Call Centre and Ticketing Offices.

With the changes, you may see some increase and decrease on the average Enrich Miles required for Award Tickets for all destinations and class of travel.
Below are some examples of the changes to the flight redemptions:

* The above are examples of the current and average Miles required for redemption and are STRICTLY for illustration purposes only
* The actual Miles required for redemption for each destination will vary according to fares, seat availability, passenger demand and seasonality

Kindly be informed that Enrich flights booked and ticketed prior to 10 June 2017 will be honoured and subjected to terms and conditions at time of original redemption ticket issued. The new fare conditions will apply for bookings made after 10 June 2017.

It appears there’s not going to be any fixed points value to a specific journey – they’re going dynamic, so will all depend on the fares available at that time, seasonality & seat availability!

They’re also ‘gilding the lily’ somewhat, by allocating an arbitrary points value to the fuel surcharges in the pre 10[SUP]th[/SUP] June examples, in an attempt to make the comparisons appear better!

Without specific examples, it's difficult to imagine Enrich members being the winners!

Moving from an award chart system to dynamic redemption is fascinating, mainly because there's increased opportunity for all loyalty program members (albeit at a higher rate)

As with most airlines, award seats typically exist where revenue management can think they can't sell seats at a cash price above the equivalent in miles as recovered from the loyalty program. Dynamic pricing allows for greater inventory control. Typically, let's say an award seat is released 300-days prior to departure. Under this scenario, it's a member race to secure the seat. Whereas, under the new Enrich model, if Malaysia Airlines has a flash sale at the 150-day point, it could be possible for a loyalty member to snap up an award seat at a reasonable rate (or as in the above example - at a LOWER rate than current static-award chart), or where that seat would otherwise be totally unavailable (sold out). Perhaps even scope to implement personalised pricing (ie: Platinums see different award pricing than Blue members).

Sure it's a new way to look at the value of a mile, but personally, I don't see anything wrong with the move so long as Enrich members continue to have access to more award opportunities.
I also expect more loyalty programs to head in the same direction, especially those with a host program that consistently has high pax loads. The only other consideration would be understanding how each segment of FFP members value set goalposts, and what (if any) impact this would have on earning miles.

However, I can't help but think this is all part of a larger picture for MH. Time will tell.

SHameful changes - destroys the value proposition of Enrich because it means it is impossible to work towards a clear goal with one's points earning activity.

Interesting. sounds like MH Enrich don't really want to be in business anymore (at least for OW partners).

Or they are just really after the "dumb" money - i.e. people who don't know better and are just crediting / redeeming MH Enrich?

Ability to put an award on hold would be useful given most Australians would access Enrich points via Amex but can't imagine it would happen

No word on that beyond the new points & cash option. That may make them more likely the tell you availability without miles in your account though.

Will also be interesting to see how one-ways are calulated. Half the points of a return or based on one-way fare.

Have usually been able to able to see MH availability as long as you have 1000 miles.

Actually, I called up this morning to get a points and taxes quote for CX J MAN-xHKG-BKK. 66K +GBP230 - mentioned that I needed to go off and transfer the balance of points and was told that they'd put it on hold for 48 hours. sweet.

That's awesome! When is the flight?

VERY interesting. They told me tonight they won't book partner flights out past 6 months.

I asked the question (can I book for April next year) when I called back to complete my booking this morning (Amex transferred in < 24 hours!) - I was told "anytime for this calendar year, but if next year then max is 6 months out." That makes no sense to me but there you go.

Do Malays end their financial year on new years eve?

The whole thing smells like Airbucks?
