Mel CAN II

After success of MELCAN I - MEL Champagne Appreciation Night - and after some very brief discussions on that night it's time to throw open to ALL AFF members a platform to discuss MELCAN II.

Everything is on the table here - date / location / whatever / everything. My initial thoughts this type of event could and should be so low key that there is no valid reason to not to enjoy it twice a year. Thoughts on that please?

MELCAN I was held on a Wednesday night - I planned this deliberately because it was CNY and I knew I would be in Australia. Was a Wednesday night date a mistake? Maybe / maybe not?

Given the location I chose a Wednesday night was perfect - we had a room which seats 100 people virtually to ourselves - we impacted no other patrons so that was perfect. However Wednesday night is just not ideal being mid week - would a Friday or Saturday be better? Probably YES in terms of more suitable for more people - NO in terms of getting that type of room to hold the function with no other patrons - Fri and Sat nts that room is full.

Should we be looking for a location more central to MEL CBD to make easier for more AFFers to access? Possibly / probably / who knows - your thoughts good AFFers?

Should we revisit the idea of actually attempting to get an 'expert' to present / address / educate attendees? Personally I think the more simple and straight forward we keep this night the lower the cost and therefore the more affordable we keep it for ALL AFFers - I would hate to see this night become an elitist event - it must always be ALL inclusive for ALL Affers - again would love your thoughts?

As I said above - we held MELCAN I - now we require input from ALL AFFers - let's make MELCAN II that much better again.

I will have a think about it. Not to say that Topolinos wasnt awesome, it was just a little awkward for us to get to when trains and trams failed to arrive as anticipated.

Looks like you had good time last week, hope I can make it this time. Unfortunately had to miss the first one due to CNY function in MEL that night.

With regards to the second event I must say that I prefer days ending in "day". On one hand it was probably good that it was a Wednesday because I was more "behaved" than I would be on a weekend. That said, on the other hand, I know interstate people who may have watched jealously would prefer a weekend (so they can fly in).

Which date(s) do you have in mind?

6 mths to the day would make it Wed Aug 19 - the following w/e is Fri Aug 21 and Sat Aug 22.

But if members think 6 monthly / twice yearly too often - if they feel it might lose some of its gloss - open to all suggestions from all members from all states.

I'm clearly revealing my location bias here, however St Kilda was the perfect spot for me (for those scratching their head, the venue was a 5 min walk from home).

Given blackcat20's comments, I think anywhere with reliable and available public transport or parking is important, so the city or inner-suburban gets my vote (did I mention the sunsets are absolutely brilliant in St Kilda)?

I'd also prefer mid-week (ie. Wednesday) in agreement with penegal - it's easier to be responsible on a school night (oh and my weekends are usually quite full )

As MEL is such a distance to travel, it would be nice if it coincided with a JQ35 flight, personally
