I posted the result of this op-up in the off-topic thread a few weeks ago when it happened and I said I would post some more detail, so here it is.
I was travelling with my brother, on separate tickets routing FRA-xLHR-SIN. I was on QF stock & numbers, he on BA stock & BA numbers. My silver status had cleared days earlier, meaning this was my first ever airline flight with status. Exciting! The possibility of an op-up had entered my mind for no other reason than the status itself...I told myself to shut up more than once (didn't even bother checking the loads...). Associated on my brothers itinerary was a nothing AA membership.
Upon check-in at FRA out boarding passes would not spit out, so the agent told us to get them in London on arrival - no problems. Incidentally, the most inquisitive agent ever...talked to us for a good 5 minutes...not very efficient for a German:!:
I had pre-reserved a seat for myself on ba.com for an exit row for the flight to LHR...this didn't stick, and we were seated together in the back couple of rows (although we ended up having D/E/F to ourselves). This was not a great problem, but my main concern was the implications of this for our onward journey to Singapore...I had reserved myself 80A and my brother 71D, so you can understand my concern. I am 6'5" and he is only slightly shorter...so the leg room is greatly desired.
We panicked a bit but a check on qf.com at the airport (to settle my nerves more than anything) still had each of us in our separate bookings in 80A/71D. Upon arrival and transfer to T3 we lined up at the QF desk to get our boarding passes...
Me: Hi, we couldn't get our boarding passes in Germany so we need to pick them up here
Agent: No worries, one minute
Me: We pre-reserved seats and are a little worried they've been lost with this issue...could you make sure we're in 80A and 71D as well please
Agent: Actually you're not in those seats.
Me (defeated tone): Whatttt???!?!
Agent: You're in premium economy.
Me: What, both of us?
Agent: Yes!
Me: I can deal with that...
We weren't seated together initially (aisle behind one another) however by the time we got to the gate we had been moved to be seated together.
First flight on QF with status and that happens...awesome! It will probably never happen again but it did come in handy when the flight was cancelled 5 hours after we were meant to takeoff, which meant we beat 400-odd economy passengers to accommodation.
Y+ in general is a really good product...food was superb. I rate it easily better in both quality and quantity than what was offered up in Emirates J weeks before. The best scrambled eggs I had on the entire 3 week trip were the ones on the plane! Many runs up and down from the fabulous F/As with juices and water...seats were fantastic too, got some good sleep. QF have a big winner with a Y+ product of this quality.
So, there you go. I will never complain about having a unique surname that starts with an X...separate tickets, stock and flight numbers, separately reserved seats, the only way the person behind the desk would have known we were linked was the name. I still can't believe we both got the bump!
Thanks QF.
