I have visited 8) Milan, 7) Frankfurt and 4) Paris and would disagree.

But I guess if you have one bad experience that will stick in your memory more than 100 good ones.

I would disagree about Beijing - I found the locals incredibly friendly!!

I have been to 1,3,4,6 & 7 and will visit 10 next year.So far I wouldn't agree.

True. You may like to add your tuppence worth by naming unfriendly cities.

Haven't been to Joburg nor Nassau, Moscow and Beijing were a long time ago, so they don't really count either, been to the others fairly recently and can't say I agree.
The city that has most disappointed me recently has been Barcelona, my credit card was compromised there (as well as those of two other friends that were there at the same time), rude uncaring locals, do you want cigarette smoke with that? Actually that isn't a question, you'll get smoke blown in your face regardless of whether you want it or not!
I definitely will not be back there in a hurry.

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with the assessment (although maybe not the ranking) of Jo'burg.

If 'unsafe, filled with crime' is a major component of the survey, then Port Moresby would top my list. But of anywhere I've visited, Riyadh wins hands down as the city where I've most felt that the locals didn't want me there.

Even on a good day I still detest Manila, Philippines.
It is one of the ugliest, most pirated, thieving cities on this planet.

Although some of those cities are unsafe, maybe even dangerous that doesn't necessarily make them unfriendly.met some lovely Africans in Joburg/Pretoria and had interesting conversations.Same goes for Port Moresby but my visits were December 69 and January 70.On the second visit the locals would come up to me and shake my hand saying-"him fella catchim bus" which I had done on my first visit.always with a local though.
Unfriendly?Well Barcelona certainly would qualify. As would Dubai-it was only the expats who would talk to you.

When raising Barcelona, the question is which Barcelona? The Barcelona in proximity to Las Ramblas or the rest?

When I was there in May, I as always largely enjoyed Barcelona- and hotel staff and those at the restaurants were at the very least polite, if not warm and helpful? BUT one evening I ventured along Las Ramblas and could not get out of there quick enough. Once people start invading my personal space, by touching me when they are selling something I go all Mr Hyde, and not even in Mumbai or Bangkok have I encountered such a rude forceful bunch of touts as I did along Las Ramblas.

I've found the occasional unfriendly person, but never an unfriendly city.

How does your home town rate for friendliness based on that as a criterion?

I can actually agree with this list although I'll probably remove Frankfurt and add another French city instead :p

Yep, that is fair enough, hence why these lists are best taken with a pinch of salt!

Had only positive experiences with Paris, which is the only city I've visited on that list. Twice, I looked lost looking at a map and a local came over in an attempt to help point me in the right direction, even though they didn't speak English at all.

Not sure how Milan got on that list - we had a very nice time there!

I am surprised that there are no South American cities on that list, if the criteria were things like "dirty streets" and "threatening atmosphere for tourists".

I wouldn't call Nassau unfriendly. Sure, someone approached me and tried to sell me drugs on the street, but he was very friendly about it :p

Overfriendly cities might be worse than unfriendly ones.
