Re: Ask The Pilot

Maybe we need a new Playground thread.... When was your first flight ?
Slightly OT but my first solo as a pilot was in a C152 (Rego ZS-KDL) on 17 Dec 1983 (an auspicious day in aviation). Seem to remeber Straitman was rated for Tiger Moth
JB747 & others: first solo in ??

Ask The Pilot

Never had the guts to do solo. But did ~20hrs in 150/152 when I was 16. Unfortunately ran out of $$ at the time.

Would dearly love to get ppl one day soon!

Ahh, same year but in a 172 - VH-EUI at LTV June12.

Re: Ask The Pilot

C-150 VH-TDX back in 1996 at YMMB.. still remember my instructors words: you won't learn it anymore with me sitting next to you, time to do it on your own!

Re: When was your first Piloting Activity?

My first solo flight was in a Venture Powered Glider - intentionally turning off the engine in an aircraft seemed unnatural ;)

Sadly I never flew solo in the Bulldogs (University Air Squadron Bristol) :(

A cessna of some description at Kalgoorlie back in the 80's.

It would be fair to say that, aside from being an expensive activity, flying was not something that suited me. My flights typically ended on approach with the instructor saying 'I think I'll take over now'!

As a piloting activity, but not solo, about 1990 in a cessna 150-ish. A good friend at Uni, who was well advanced in learning to be a pilot, who went onto the airforce and seems to have done rather well according to google, took me for a fly and let me turn it around over Moreton Bay somewhere.

The other time was a glider intro flight. The guy let me turn it around, 180degrees, and line up on the strip. That was fun.

Pretty lame, but medical advice 20 years ago says I cannot pass a pilot's medical. (never bothered with a second opinion due to the expense of flying ;) ) So it is the best I can do.

First flight December 19th 1967 in an appropriately registered C150 ROT.
First solo January 8th 1968 in another C150 KUL and about 17,000hrs since.

Hmmm..
First flight (as a copiloting activity) 1968
First solo 1977 in a C152 at YBAF
First flight (as a navigating activity) 1968 somewhere in North Qld (don't ask me where - we got lost and had to land and ask where we were)

1977 in Christchurch at Canterbury Aero Club in a Cherokee. nz$23 per hour, dual.

Off the roof of the house in my Batman suit when I was 7. Great flight for a second or two.

Flew a PA 28 140 as my first civilian solo followed by my first military solo in an A7 Macchi at N0 2 OCU (dual time only in a Winjeel)

I started out life as the navy version of a navigator, so my first flight in that role was in 1974. I later got my private licence, with the first solo being in a Tomahawk out of Canberra in 1977. Solo in CT4 1979, Macchi 1980, and A4 1981.

First flight in command of a 767, December 1992. 744, September 2004, and A380, October 2009.

Wow - I get to follow JB :(
First solo was in a 172 (Romeo India Papa) at 16 in 1972, then a 182, then aero commander.
Also spent 3 days in 1974 in the TAA sim at essendon "flying" a DC9 and 727. Was great fun, but then I found GIRLS!
Discovered how to tow gliders (C180) at some time after I got my licence, but didn't find out til later that I was supposed to be endorsed to do it.
Also discovered some rules and regulations (after) flying a 172 doorless when photographing sydney-hobart yachts.
Ahhhhhhh, it was fun to be young

First and only - about 10 minutes somewhere between Aurukun and Cairns (FNQ) in 1992. Ex was flying a 206 to Cairns for maintenance. Yes he was qualified to instruct. Done only to say I had done it!

<consults logbook>

First Flight - 29 DEC 96 - C150 Rego VH-JGJ
First Solo - 22 FEB 97 - C150 VH-JGJ at 9.4 hours
PPL - 03 JL 98 - PA28 VH-FTU at 58.2 hours

Total of 82.6 hours and then I moved to the UK for a couple of years and never really got a chance to get back into flying. Last flight was in March 09, still holding out hope of getting back in the pilot's seat at some point ...

I remember my last - out of ROT with the Rotorua Aero Club. It was a Piper something, had the CFI with me (reading a book) as I was taking my Bride to be (a couple of weeks later) for the last hurrah... sad, getting married ruins a few things, flying is one ;)

I have a great photo Kim took of the back of my head flying into the sunset over Mt Tarawera where we had done a quick fly through of the crater as well as a run through Tarawera valley and out over the Rotorua area lakes.

I did do another accompanied flight out of AMZ a few years later, but had a few "issues" with the landing approach to the taxi way  - the instructor took over after confirming I didn't know where I was going ;)

All I have now is a dust covered log book full of memories  BTW - Married 18 years now

First flight was on a C172 a couple of years ago.
First solo was on a PA 28 about half a year after that, with an attempted landing which nobody would ever be proud of.
