They must have converted it to the Conservatorium quite soon after your stay @Flyfrequently - my dad worked at "the Con" as it was called from 1972 onwards. Unless "the Con" he worked at was in a different building. He's passed away so I can't ask him.I was able to find its location, it is now the Music Conservatorium of Newcastle.
Oh your TR is bringing back memories for me! I grew up in Newcastle - my family moved there in January 1970 and I stayed until posted out by the RAAF in January 1985 after Mr Seat 0A and I were married the November before.walked to Nobby's Beach

My best friend and I used to catch the bus from Garden Suburb to Nobby's beach every day of the summer holidays and bake ourselves on the sand, slathered in baby oil. I quickly and very unfashionably gave up sunbaking in the mid 1970s after one burn too many left me covered in blisters. Given that misspent youth, I am constantly amazed that I don't yet (at 64) suffer from skin cancers. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Ah that all makes sense! Dad worked there from 1972 to ~1990. He was actually a lecturer at the then Newcastle Teachers’ College that eventually became part of the Newcastle University. He was a music teacher, and working at The Con was a compulsory extra- curricular duty. He enjoyed it as he was himself a former student of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. You might find this article interesting @Seat0B
