Qantas and Emirates today unveiled details of benefits that will be available to frequent flyers through their proposed partnership.
The partnership, which remains subject to regulatory approval, is designed to offer customers a seamless travel experience across one of the world’s largest networks.
Some of the key benefits that Qantas Frequent Flyer and Emirates Skywards members will be able to access for travel from 31 March 2013 are:
- Earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points or Emirates Skywards Miles on Emirates and Qantas flights (with some exceptions for Emirates Skywards members on the Qantas domestic network).
- An expanded network for members of each program to earn Qantas Status credits and Status bonus or Skywards Tier Miles and Tier bonus.
- Redeem points/Miles on any part of the Qantas or Emirates network – a combined total of more than 175 destinations worldwide.
- Access to both Qantas and Emirates lounges for Gold members (or above) of either program in Australia, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
- Have their tier status in either program recognised with both airlines when flying on the joint Qantas-Emirates network (where available).
Chief Executive of Qantas Loyalty, Lesley Grant, said the benefits announced today would give frequent flyers of either airline the opportunity to earn and redeem points or Miles across a massive network.
“Our shared goal has been to offer Qantas and Emirates customers the best global network, flying the largest combined A380 fleet and supported by the best rewards for our frequent flyers,” said Ms Grant.
“Both airlines already offer some of the highest quality travel experiences, including our lounges and loyalty benefits, so this is about bringing together the best of both worlds,” she added.
Thierry Antinori, Emirates’ Executive Vice President, Passenger Sales Worldwide said: ”It is an exciting time to be an Emirates Skywards member, yesterday we announced Platinum – our new tier, which has been developed to enhance the travel experience for frequent travellers and to offer additional benefits to Emirates Skywards members who have earned over 150,000 Tier Miles in a year.
“Now today we are unveiling the wide range of benefits that our members can enjoy as part of the Emirates and Qantas partnership,” added Mr Antinori.
Emirates and Qantas have also announced their shared baggage policy on certain routes for travel from 31 March 2013. To enable a more seamless experience as customers travel on the joint network, Qantas will move from a piece and weight system, to a weight system, for all international flights – excluding those to/from the Americas. As part of this alignment, Emirates will increase its pre-purchase excess baggage discount to 30 per cent
Eligible Qantas Frequent Flyers, Qantas Club members and Skywards members will enjoy additional allowances when travelling across the joint network.

Earning points
- Both Qantas Frequent Flyers and Emirates Skywards members will earn either Qantas Frequent Flyer points or Skywards miles on all flights on the joint Qantas-Emirates network – with the exception that Skywards members can only earn miles on Qantas domestic flights* that are part of an international journey with Qantas or Emirates.
- The earn rate for points/miles will be different depending on the fare purchased and the airline flight number on the ticket.
Earning status credits/tier miles
- Both Qantas Frequent Flyers and Emirates Skywards members can earn status credits/tier miles and status bonus/tier bonus on the flight number of the airline they have their frequent flyer membership with.
Redeeming points
- From 31 March 2013, Qantas Frequent Flyers can use their points to redeem a Qantas Classic Award flight on Emirates services and Emirates Skywards members can use their miles to redeem a Skywards Saver Reward flight on Qantas services, subject to availability.
- In many instances, the number of points Qantas Frequent Flyer members will need to book a Classic Award flight on a Qantas or Emirates flight will be the same.
Classic Award on Qantas flights/ Upgrade with Points
- Classic Award flights must be booked on a Qantas flight number on Qantas operated aircraft
- Qantas Frequent Flyers can use their points to upgrade eligible commercial fares when booked on the Qantas flight number on Qantas operated aircraft
Classic Award on Emirates flights / Upgrade with Points
- Classic Award flights must be booked on an Emirates flight number on an Emirates operated aircraft
- Qantas Frequent Flyers cannot use their points to upgrade when booked on the Emirates flight number on Qantas operated aircraft
Lounge access
- For travel from 31 March 2013 Platinum One, Platinum and Gold Qantas Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates lounges where available across Australia, Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
- In Dubai, Platinum One and Platinum Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates First Lounges and Gold Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates Business Lounges.
- Qantas Club members can continue to access the Qantas lounges across the Qantas network as well as the Emirates Business Lounge in Dubai and the American Airlines Admirals Club in London when flying Qantas or Emirates between Australia, Dubai and London.
- Reciprocal lounge access is not permitted for the Americas, New Zealand or South Africa.
Tier Benefits
- Existing tiered member benefits including priority check-in, priority waitlist and fast track through immigration (where available) offered by the operating carrier will be extended to the other carrier's frequent flyer members.
Dubai Connect
- Qantas will introduce Dubai Connect, matching Emirates’ long stop over service in Dubai, which provides customers with complimentary hotel accommodation, transfers, meals and visa costs where their connection time is greater than six hours and less than 24 hours for First and Business passengers or greater than eight hours and less than 24 hours for Premium Economy and Economy passengers, and where there is no earlier scheduled connection available. Chauffeur Drive
- Chauffeur Drive will be offered to Qantas First and Business travellers on services between Australia, Dubai and London from 31 March 2013. Elsewhere on the Qantas network, Chauffeur Drive will be available on flights greater than 12 hours from July 2013 – namely, flights between Australian and Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Santiago and Johannesburg.
- Passengers will be collected in a luxury vehicle and driven to the airport to meet their flight. On arrival at their destination, they will be met by another chauffeur service and driven to their hotel, office or home. More information, including mileage restrictions and eligibility requirements, will be available shortly from qantas.com.

- To enable a more seamless experience as customers travel on the joint network, Qantas will move from a piece and weight system, to a weight system, for all international flights – excluding those to/from the Americas. Regardless of whether a customer is travelling on Qantas or Emirates on international flights between and within Europe, Asia, North Africa, the Middle East and Australia, their overall baggage allowance will be the same (with the exception of sporting goods or infant allowances).
