Today flew SYD-MEL when I checked inn on the touch screens I accepted an offer to upgrade on points to Business which I accepted.

Then when I was onboard I was told that Catering was Not Assured and therefore was only offered a drink.

I found this highly annoying and ripped off as the main reason that I upgraded was to have lunch on my flight!

Is this normal?

I want my 5000 points back!!

My BP often says 'catering not assured' if I upgrade late using the computers, or sometimes on the 8.45pm out of Sydney when I guess nobody is around to alter the food orders. The other day at Adelaide, I asked the dragon for an upgrade and she pre-warned me catering was not assured. I asked her to withhold the upgrade until she found out from catering whether there'd be a meal available as it was a drinks flight and I was already in 4A. It's worth checking - with meal service taking up most of a short flight anyway, it would be quite annoying sitting there like a doodle with only a stiff gin to wet your whistle.

I seem to remember that it says somewhere on the website that catering cannot be guaranteed for an on departure points upgrade... I've had points refunded for less, though, so you could ask.
