In addition to fuel and the Dallas tax, Qantas are now introducing a "peak" surcharge

Peak day of week fare surcharge

Qantas and Emirates will also apply a weekend travel surcharge for tickets issued in Australia as follows:

• A surcharge of $25 will apply for all outbound travel from Australia on Fridays and Saturday on routes across the joint network (excluding Singapore, Thailand and Kuala Lumpur).
• A surcharge of $25 will apply for all outbound travel from Australia on Saturdays and Sundays (Qantas operated services) and on Fridays and Saturdays (Emirates operated services) for travel to Thailand.

The Q Surcharges are effective for all bookings ticketed on/after 15 May 2014, for immediate travel.

Customers booked and ticketed before 15 May 2014, for travel on the selected routes, will not incur the Q Surcharge.[/TD]

There won't be many on here affected by this (ie a devaluation of Award tickets as per the thread title) I wouldn't have thought.
Economy awards are already atrocious value IMHO and the only premium awards affected are a couple of weeks to HNL at Oct and Xmas school hols.

Not too fussed by a $25 surcharge for Fri/Sat travel. I agree some people may be.

Seriously this just isn't cool.

Whilst as pointed out above it won't really affect me it's more that the extra charging mechanism is now in place, watch out for all sorts of other nonsense riding on these initial steps.

Definitely true as economy awards are woeful value with the taxes and surcharges QF already imposes.

QFF seems intent on converting points into something which is used along with a not insignificant cash co-pay. This might provide them with some short term financial benefit but ultimately they start discouraging the "Pavlov's dog" behaviour which has so many people collecting them in the hope of a 'free' flight.

They are "managing" that by the continued decline in availability of premium cabin award seats. where is was once possible to obtain say 3 x J awards on the same flight, its getting harder and harder to find multiple premium seats available and U awards on anything other than a domestic flight.

I think that's true for non status pax, but those with status can quite easily get big blocks if seats if booked in advance. Case in point we got 4x J seats MEL-JFK return for November about a month ago. We did have 6 seats reserved but the grandparents were non starters.

Oh I don't doubt that. I think the people worst affected by this surcharge will be those trying to take the family to Europe during the holidays, and trying to stay loyal to QF whilst on a budget. $200 per person on top of the premium QF are already charging on Y fares is likely to be yet another nail in the coffin of QFi.
