A friend who is a Qantas employee is thinking of adding me as their staff travel buddy. I would like to know if the buddy gets exactly the same benefits as the staff member and also, if travelling without the staff member, could I travel on other carriers.

I have a QF staffer friend and my understanding is..you have the same access to Qantas flights when travelling with the staff member.
If travelling on Qantas flights without the staff member the category for onload and possible upgrade is lower. Also certain tickets like longservice tickets you must travel together.
On other airlines it depends on the agreement with the carrier

When travelling on Qantas flights, your status is the same as if you were travelling with the staff member. IE: Your onload chances are the same, and if you purchase an upgradeable ticket (the staff member must be senior to a certain level) your chances are the same.

Where it becomes different is when travelling on other airlines. A Qantas staff member has access to a huge number of airlines, and when you are travelling with them you have the same access on many carriers. However, when travelling by yourself, you only have access to American, LAN and Finnair.

As a whole, while the staff travel process is very cheap, it can be a pain sometimes. I've spent plenty of time sitting at BNE waiting for an empty seat on a SYD flight (and it still cost me $55 - could have gone confirmed for $75). I've also had to make the 600k drive from Berlin to Frankfurt and cut my holidays short just to be able to make it home. Don't rely on it during peak periods, and especially with the recent cutbacks its becoming increasingly harder to use. Also be prepared for checkin staff to treat you like you're the scum of the earth (esp in Sydney). You just need to organise yourself well and be prepared to make changes at the last minute - which is hard if you have booked other flights, hotels etc etc.

Trips to America are good during off seasons. The BNE-LAX-BNE flight is my usual (even when I was living in Sydney) as its generally not as full. AA standby is also easy enough during off seasons and you can use QF on the LAX-JFK-LAX sector - which is always empty.

Are qantas frequent flyer points and/or status credits earned on staff travel?

Or just buy a confirmed seat on JQ for $59 (at the moment)... I thought QF staff would have got a better deal than that, wow. (OR $55 on DJ, if you don't have corporate loyalty and want FF points too.)

ISTR that the discount is based on the Full 'flexi' fare, not deep discount.

e.g. The base BNE-SYD O/W Y fare is 411.85(AUD)

. An ID90 fare would be $41.19
ppplus.bmp
. So $55 is in the realms of that.

Nope no points or credits on staff travel.

Often for domestic it's not worth it. For instance when travelling SYD-HVB, a return QF standby ticket is $210 (ie for SYD-BNE-HVB and back). A JQ SYD-HVB ticket is generally $69. Ditto for SYD-ROK, same as the HVB fare and one can often get the DJ direct from Rocky for about $100.

Realistically, its not the amazing perk people often make out that is it, although is certainly good value if your flexible and patient (of course thats often hard when trying to organise leave etc etc).

I'd have to agree, as an agent with access to AD75 on Y and J, I never use it on domestic (as you say, why would you when you can get confirmed space cheaper), and rarely use it on International, and even then only on airlines who will provide confirmed AD75 space (a perk for premium agents), it's simply not worth risking getting bumped off a flight and ruining travel plans.

I've been an agent for years, and have saved thousands and thousands off accommodation but you're not missing a tremendous amount with AD/ID fares in my opinion, especially when you factor no SC's/Pts, not to mention the very real possibility of disruption.
