Hi folks,

My wife and I are planning a RTW trip and already have an existing one-way classic award bookings from SYD-ORD in F (costing 168,000 points each + taxes). Subsequent trips yet to be booked.

However, after applying for the Citibank Signature rewards credit card (with 80,000 bonus points) I've just realised that with another 45,000 points, I could 'upgrade' our tickets to a Oneworld Explorer fare in F (costing 420,000 points each).

I'm assuming that the 420k OWE fare provides better value than a number of single classic award bookings. Is this correct?

Also, any ideas on how to get 45,000 points relatively quickly? This forum is usually very good at highlighting efficient point-earn opportunities, but in this case I will settle for quicker but less efficient methods (hoping to book in the next few weeks).

Cheers!
John

Apply another credit card for signup bonus. But might take time for the actual bonus points to appear.

Yeah, was thinking that but might take time for points to appear. It pains me but buying points from Qantas using their top-up option might be the easiest (but least efficient).

No relatives who could gift you points while waiting for the bonus ones to appear?

what if you settle on a 280K business class award instead? First class is not offered everywhere and not OW airlines have it so your 420K trip might see you travelling half the flights in J

Need Wine. I have a free join code for Epiqure and there are a few 2000 bonus points offer at the moment.

expensive points but you do get booze

Not sure if it's worth it, but maybe buy some foreign currency (which you'll need anyway) through Travelex? You pay a bit of a premium in the form of a commission (which is waived when not earning QFF points) and the actual FX rate may or may not be competitive, but it's 1 point for every A$ you spend. Be sure to follow the right link so that your QFF number is recorded.

Also be wary of cash advance fees charged by your bank if paying via credit card, which in any case attracts an additional % fee compared to paying via direct debit. Though you could potentially earn even more points that way by double dipping, depending on your credit card. (I think I may have done this in the past by making sure my credit card was so far in surplus, ie completely paid off and then some, that even a cash advance didn't incur interest. But my memory's a bit fuzzy so that could be wrong.)

There's a cap of $9,999 for earning points. But this appears to apply on a per-transaction, so you might be able to get to 45,000 points by changing a lot of money, and maybe changing it back again.

It usually takes 2-5 days for the money to be ready, with the points hitting your account pretty soon thereafter.

If you have an appropriate credit card, and don't mind the payment cost - pre-pay some tax!

If you overpay (by "mistake") you will get it back eventually.

This approach may tie up / require far more cash than you have, but is definitely quick.

What about the David jones card. Currently 30 or 40000 bonus. Should be relatively easy to sign up in store.

Hi John

SIMPLE..........................Find a family member or members ( some of your friends might even be related obscurely ????...you don't need to prodiuce birth certificates do you ????) and get them to do a points transfer so you top up your points. You will spend a heap whilst you are away and then pay them back with your accrued points and ongoing points when you get back ???????????????????
Easy way rather than signing up for new Credit cards etc but don't forget the easy 7,500 points with the AMEX card, fee free for the first 12 months
Good luck

Cheapest would probably be to sign up to the DJ amex (non platinum) for 22,500 points at a cost of $99. One for you and one for the missus.

Hi folks,

During the Christmas period Qantas was running a promotion on vouchers. I bought $1800 worth of flight vouchers and got 18000 points. Don't know if that program is still running or not.

It's not still running. The 10x bonus points was only for vouchers purchased during a set period in December 2013.

You could pre-pay a tax bill and make an error by a factor of 10. Then call up the ATO and explain your mistake - they will refund your overpayment by cheque. Hence you don't lose the points you earned on your CC.

I haven't personally done this but remember reading about it somewhere on another thread...

It would be unwise to ring up and say you made a mistake. That would prompt way too many questions. The best approach would be for the overpayment to be resolved when submitting the tax return.

Many things can add up.

Credit Card joining boni.

If not already shopping at Woolworths..join Everyday Rewards. Also earn points at Masters, and Big W etc..

Prepay bills (and not just your tax bill). Rates, phones etc...

With the Credit Cards you do have...check out the bonus partners that earn more points per $. Are there any you can take advantage of?

Hope you know someone on here well enough to lend you 45k.
