Hi Everyone.

It's been said that the new Qantas unifrom will be released on the 16th April 2013, no staff know what it looks like yet and will be launched to staff the same time it is to the media. Qantas staff will be showing off the unifrom, with the help of Miranda Kerr (from what i've been told).
It has been said;
Those who have seen the new uniforms, which are top secret at the moment but will be unveiled later his month, describe them as chic, fresh, clean, modern and bold. The Aboriginal motif uniforms, designed by Peter Morrissey in 2003, will disappear in favour of what Grant says will be a "radically different" design inspired by nature

So any preferences as to what you would like incorporated into the new design both from a practical point and and a design perspective?

The designer was chosen by staff, and the brief compiled by staff (from survey) and with help from marketing.
As far as i know, it will be more colorful and will 'stand out'. Staff have mentioned that the current uniform is boring, dull, bleak and 'time for a change'.

Cabin crew and ground staff will have the same uniform, compared to the 'blue' for the ground staff and 'silver' for cabin crew.

From a practical POV, material testing has been done for the past few months, has gone through the washing cycles and procedures, stain tests, wear and tear, OH&S committee has been involved approving the materials and cuts.

Unifrom won't be worn until end of the year or start of next year.
They still have to make the 30000+ uniform items and get themn shipped across the world and to staff members homes.

I just hope they're not like the Jetstar uniforms with cheap looking 'polo' shirts, and ugly orange.
Although the current uniforms have been around for a long time, they are still in my view stylish, elegant, professional, fitting the image of QF and unique.

I've never ever liked those aboriginal print dresses with the black stockings - they always seemed so dark and sinister and heavy. I'm not sure if they still wear those hideous double breasted blazers which went out of style about 20 years ago?

I think VA got some things really, really right with their 'new' uniform. Those red shift-dresses with the simple black belt look terrific on slim ladies - it's a terrific rich earthy-red colour rather than a brash fire-engine red, and it's simple, modern and stylish. I also think charcoal, flat-fronted pants were an excellent choice for the men. Again, simple but modern and stylish. I think VA looks great in their black tailored overcoats - I'm not sure if they still wear them but they're a great cut and very Melbourne. I do think the womens blouses are an unflattering cut and choice of fabric (they just hand limply), and the mens ties look really cheap (and should never be worn with a short-sleeve shirt.

I would have though for identity purposes QF would stick to it's brand colours of red, white and black but realise this is similar to VA's colours of red, purple and charcoal. A simple modern red and white dress for the women with a modern well-cut feminine jacket (blazers are not feminine), and corporate black and white for the men with red ties. Simple Qantas kangaroo logos in subtle places.

The problem for QF is that their workforce ranges from just out of school to well past retirement age so in order to have a 'one-style fits all' uniform they are going to have to be conservative. I can't imagine the matronly cabin crew squeezing into the VA shift-dress without complaining!

Is there a thread/article on the worlds best and worst airline uniforms?

Is that implying that they will be made overseas?

Bracing for the "Shame on Qantas not supporting Australian industry" comments...

Well considering the current uniform is made elsewhere, i assume it will be the same.

And of course there are a lot of Qantas staff based overseas so even if it was made in Australia it would have to be exported to their homes.

i have a picture in my mind of it looking like the carpet in the Cairns Terminal (not sure if its still there but years ago it was very bright, colorful and definitely stood out!!

Nope, the entire terminal is covered in dull grey/brown tiles.

I'm guessing that there will be some sort of general outcry by those who have said that the new uniform, unlike the previous iteration, signifies Qantas spitting on and failing to acknowledge the Indigenous people of Australia. Or something like that.

Hey, it was the Jewish community and anti-Halal-ists' turns... next up.....

Virgin's inspiration was apparently supposed to hark back to the classic romantic travel era.

If the inspiration for the new uniforms is European and "stand out", then I can only guess that this will either please well or be a complete failure - there won't be an in-between. Of course, if it is the latter according to the public, it'll be a nightmare for Qantas to backflip on the design.

Look at Lufthansa and British Airways. The hats for the ladies is a dead-in ringer geographical idiosyncrasy. Would look rather out of place in Australia IMO, but then again I know fashion like a man knows about pregnancy.

This post was not intended to be insulting to people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent

That's a shame, I would have hoped for a gradual roll out, not all at once, sort of like repainting aircraft tails :p

Though I hope it's not body paint! ;)
