Priority for upgrades - fare class or status?

Can't see asked elsewhere - does PE have priority over economy for upgrades or does status win - e.g. Platinum with an economy ticket versus a Gold with a PE ticket?

From what has been reported here, booking class trumps status.
In your example (for upgrades to J), the SG travelling in PE will be ahead of the WP in Y.
I guess the exception to the rule is a CL but then again the rules with them (in relation to the rest of us mere mortal vanilla QFF members) are that there are no rules..

No - the T&C are specific that a WP upgrading to Business will get that seat before a SG. There is no consideration noted in relation to the booked cabin, so the WP in Y will get that upgrade, not the SG in PE.

16.3.2 Qantas will determine which requests for Flight Upgrades will be awarded, if any, at any time between 7 days and 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the flight from its port of origin, depending on the Qantas Frequent Flyer status level of the Member.
16.3.3 Flight Upgrades will be awarded to Members according to their Qantas Frequent Flyer status levels in the following order: Platinum Members first, then Gold Members, then Silver Members and then Bronze Members

As for what happens within the same status level, that is not publicly documented. It may be that a WP upgrading from PE will trump a WP upgrading from economy, but then again, that WP booked in economy may have a higher PCV than the WP in PE and that could be what Qantas use.

That doesn't really specify that Y and Y+ upgrades to J are done purely on status though..
Doing a Y+ to J upgrade would then free up a Y+ seat for a Y to Y+ upgrade, so more pseudo-revenue to QF..

Yes it does; between different status levels the priority specific about status and there are no 'riders'.

Consider the following notional three class flight.

Qantas decide there are to be two upgrades to business class made available.

One WP in PE (a) has requested an upgrade to Business.
One SG in PE (b) has requested an upgrade to Business.
One WP in (c) Economy has requested an upgrade to Business, but not to PE.
One SG in (d) Economy has requested an upgrade to Business, and to PE if the Business upgrade is declined.

So to processing - the two WP (a) & (c) are considered first and get the upgrades. The SG's in PE (b) and economy (d) both miss out on Business, but with a PE seat freed up with (a)'s upgrade, (d) has the chance of an upgrade to PE.

Change this with now three Business upgrade seats available. The WP's still go first and then whatever unpublished determinant decides between the two SG's for the remaining seat. It may not necessarily be (b) in PE.

FWIW, I believe that until Altair was introduced, the SG in PE would get the upgrade to business before the SG in economy, but Altair made available more criteria for determining priority - PCV is a term used to describe such a thing.

Qantas ticket? Qantas upgrade criteria on qantas metal.

If I fly CX on CX metal with QF FF then I am not eligible to upgrade.

AFAIK if you use your QFF points to upgrade a QF marketed and operated flight, your QFF status is the only status that will be used to place you in the upgrade queue.

In theory, the idea of using both QFF for upgrades and another OW FF program status for things like seat selection and crediting earn makes sense, however I don't know how likely it is to work in practice.
