Qantas Points Expiry - A couple of anomalies?

So I got to think about this thread after reading some posts on the Qantas Facebook page and people complaining about points expiry. I think there are a couple of anomalies in the rules, or interesting things to test (or not).

I will put in one caveat, the things I'm about to mention are well and truly cover by clause 9.2.3 in the terms and conditions of the QFF program.

Points cannot be re-credited once they have expired.

So telling me that it's covered by the T&Cs, while true, will not really address my purpose in creating this thread. That purpose being my about unfairness (or an unfairness test perhaps) and whether Qantas intended these things Or even thought through the consequences.

I've also posted the full expiry conditions below for reference. Which gets me to the first little anomaly.


  1. Points expire after 18 months of inactivity. Activity does not include transfers to or from family members. What happens if someone gets a points transfer sometime great than 18 months (>18months) after last activity? Will they expire immediately that they credit in the account? The terms do say points expire at a particular time, but any points transferred in are still technically past the 18 month validity period. If they don't expire immediately, when would they expire? At 36 months past last activity? Remember the transfer is not activity.
    • I got this situation from somebody who did a transfer about a week before expiry. I wondered what would happen if they transferred after the expiry date.
  2. The next situation concerns activity date and account. Say someone takes a flight within the 18 months, in fact between 6 months (but more like 10 months) and 18 months after the last activity date, but the points don't credit for whatever reason. Then the 18 month limit passes and the points expire. But then they put in a retro claim for the missing flight/s. Do the points get reinstated. Clause 9.2.2 that the activity date is deemed to be when the flights are taken. It seems to me there is a slight bit of unfairness in this situation.
    • Remember clause 9.2.3 covers this situation in a technical sense. But the unfairness still exists in potentially being penalised because of a failure Qantas/Oneworld/Jetstar systems. (Jetstar in particular given the significant delays that can be involved)

Anyway, that's my little thoughts. Wonder if anyone has opinions?


9.2.2 All Points held in a Qantas Frequent Flyer account of a non-Active Member will expire at midnight Sydney, Australia time at the end of the 18th consecutive month for which the Member has not earned Points or Status Credits or redeemed Points (excluding any transfer of Points to or from an Eligible Family Member). For this purpose, Points earned in relation to Eligible Flights are deemed to be earned on the date the Eligible Flight was taken. Within 60 days of the Points expiration date, Qantas will notify Members of the number of Points that are about to expire and the expiration date as follows:
(a) Online Activity Statements display a warning to the Member;
(b) Members who continue to receive paper Activity Statements, will receive an Activity Statement which includes a notification that points are about to expire; and
(c) Members who have opted to receive communications online and via email, will receive a notification within their monthly electronic newsletter.
Note: With effect from 1 July 2010:
  • If a Member does not earn or redeem any Points after 30 June 2010, the Points earned before 1 July 2010 will not expire until three years after the date of the last activity on that Member's account.
  • If a Member does earn or redeem any Points after 30 June 2010, the Member's Points will expire three years from the date of the Member's last activity before 1 July 2010 or 18 months from the last date the Member earned or redeemed Points after 30 June 2010, whichever is the later.
