Fair buckets, status and other factors aside....at what level do u think opting for a business upgrade (and selecting the premium economy upgrade if not successful) versus a business upgrade alone is detrimental. IE - will someone with lower status who opts for business upgrade only, as opposed to say me with higher status opting for business with default PE, well will they get the business over me (as I would be happy to also sit in PE)..... and where would this line be drawn. Someone of equal status for instance (would they get the business upgrade over me too as i will opt for PE??)

thoughts???

My understanding is that if you apply for an upgrade from economy to business class, the upgrade is considered independent of whether you have ticketed the check-box for premium economy. Then if your upgrade request to business class is not successful, you will be considered for an upgrade to premium economy if you have checked for that option.

So the "priority" for the initial upgrade request to business class is not affected by your choice for the "second chance draw".

However, only those that programmed the logic into the computer system know for sure.

LOGIC??? :?::?::?:

You mean there is supposed to be logic somewhere in this (and many other) computer systems? What am I missing! :confused:

LOGIC??? :?::?::?: ...
Of course there's logic.

What is know is that Qantas do publish part of their points upgrade upgrade prioritisation in the T&C's and status is very important.

Of those who requested points upgrades, all WP would be granted before any SG and only after those are exhausted will PS be looked at.

Current anecdotal based wisdom suggests that fare class is a secondary determinant within each status level. i.e. An SG booked in L class would be upgraded before an SG booked in S class.

As for Process, NM's post makes sense to me. i.e.
  1. All First Class upgrade requests are processed before,
  2. All Business Class upgrade requests are processed before,
  3. All Premium Economy Upgrade requests are processed.
There was some note taken that upgrades to each of these classes are prioritised by:
  1. Status (CL>WP>SG>PS>NB>other).
  2. Booked Fare class of segment being upgraded (J>C>D>I>,W>T>R>Y>B>H ...)
  3. Length of time a member of Qantas Frequent Flyer.
(Of course, only #1 is publicly documented).

And very complicated logic it is too.

Even the statement "all WP would be granted before any SG" is not literally (according to the "logic") true, and must be qualified (complicating things).

Any single WP would be granted before any single SG, but that is not the only scenario, and it is not so simple. A single booking containing 4 WPs, (or even 4 CLs) with a requested upgrade would not be granted if there were only 3 seats (as it is an all or nothing process). In that scenario, if a single NB was the only other request, the NB would get upgraded, and the WPs wouldn't! (not likely, I know, but possible, and hence within the overall logic)

What about the time the upgrade was requested? I have been told that all things being equal - say 2 WP's with same status and same fare type both wanting one available J seat - the tiebreaker will be the earlier submission of the request?

Used to be the case, it was even published in the T&C's. However, this is appears to be no more.

Anecdotes on this forum indicate the booking fare class is now used as a secondary determinant within each status level, followed by, believe it or not, how long one has been a member of Qantas Frequent Flyer.

Thanks for all the advice....expertflyer shows many business seats remaining for my flight in 2 days...so I hope all goes well. I only booked an "S" class though...so will be interesting to see.
