Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

WA government chips is $14m

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

What a waste of a beautiful new aircraft.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

The Perth Airport website gives a few more details - Perth Airport and Qantas reach agreement

Including - "Qantas has made an in-principal agreement to move all of their domestic and international services to a new terminal at Airport Central by 31 December 2025."

Does that mean that the Perth Airport operator will finish a project on time? Presumably the schedule calls for a 2023 finish to allow for the normal 2 year delay.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Whats the longest you have stayed awake and watched movies inflight?

I have done 15 1/2 hrs Toronto - HKG in CX J and it wasn't too bad at all. As BacchusMarsh said the comfort level is the deciding factor.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

It would be disappointing if A380 flights from MEL-DXB-LHR were cancelled. I would much prefer if they dropped the A380 flights from SYD if they have to get rid of any.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Syd is the main QF A380 base
Interesting the FaceCarp hyped announcement only describes it as PER-LHR direct and not nonstop

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

If they do cancel A380 services they could decide to start refurbishing the A380 aircraft with the new J seats. That would be one possible upside.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Can't see myself doing this. As a Y passenger I'd rather fly ex-SIN or ex -KUL to somewhere on the continent, and then get to UK by train.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

With the QF Per-Sin and Per-Akl moving from T1 to T3, it will be interesting to see what happens to the QF lounge in T1.

I heard the Perth airport wants the space back!

I wonder if JQ international will move to T3 as well?

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

To summarise what we have heard so far -

WA Government to 'donate' $14M in renovation costs AND contribute to Border Force costs for up to 8 years to two completely private companies.
Most passengers will be connecting from east coast flights and therefore those passengers will provide no economic gain to WA whatsoever.
Connecting flights could be on 73H aircraft with flight times over five hours (for example BNE-PER).
Passengers will need to use the domestic lounges in PER prior to immigration.
The rumoured axing of QF9/10 and the handing over of these flights to EK. This would free up some A380 for other flights however.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

"This is a game-changing route flown by a game-changing aircraft," Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement.
I guess QF's spin comes from the top

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

I like the idea of direct to LHR, but...

As a Y passenger, I'd only do this to myself if it was an A380.

No way do I want to squeeze into a narrow Boeing seat for that length of time. Sounds like the definition of torture to me.

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Given the 787 were purchased to replace 747s that need to be retired, it is likely the 3 787 frames that operate MEL-PER-LHR-PER-MEL will replace the 2 A380 frames currently doing MEL-DXB-LHR-DXB-LHR.

The two A380 frames can be redeployed to SYD-HKG and MEL-HKG, freeing up 2 747 frames to be retired.

i reckon the next 4 x 787 will go to MEL-DFW and MEL-LAX. This would allow the A380 MEL-LAX to be cancelled and redeployed to retire another 2 747s

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Personally the thought of more than 17.5 hours on a 787 in Y petrifies me, combined with the cross country transfer and no F lounge does not make it appealing. Add to this the rumored demise of the A380 from Melbourne and sadly my preference and desire to fly QF will disappear.

I will attain life time gold in April and this will then free me form the shackles of Qantas and give me the ability to look at other OW airlines with, what for me will be, more favourable routings. I will no longer need status credits, and points are no big value these days, can easily attain them from credit cards, J lounge access is acceptable to me, so no need to fly Qantas should they drop the A380 from Melbourne.

Keeping those 747s for another year or so would allow a mid life refit to the A380s (such as replacing the seats).

I'm suspecting the other way... be surprised if it opens before 2027

Re: Qantas: non-stop Australia (Perth)-Europe (London) Boeing 787 flights set to soar

Reading through the various articles on the internet, I thought that this quote from AJ was interesting (The Guardian) -

“Our modelling shows that people from the east coast as well as South Australia would fly domestically to Perth to connect to our non-stop London service,” he said.

Is this a direct slap in the face to EK, with AJ saying that QF passengers would rather fly via PER to avoid using EK at all? Flying say ADL-PER-LHR will be no quicker than flying ADL-DXB-LHR so that excuse can be taken out of the equation. Flying say ADL-PER will also be on a 73H so this will be a significant downgrade as well compared to anything EK offers.

This is one ADL flyer who will never be flying through PER to get to Europe. Each to his or her own, but I would find it difficult to redeem points for ADL-PER-LHR let alone paying $ for it.
