QF International J Upgrade w/ Points.

Hello, I'm just wondering with J upgrades do QF hold specific seats for points upgrades (international) or is it just based on what ever seats are not sold?

I'm waitlisted J upgrade at the moment for a flight tomorrow so am keenly waiting a confirmation :)
 
My partner and I just got confirmed in Y to J upgrade (yay) so I guess the way it works behind the scenes doesn't really matter - but it'd be interesting to know :)

From my experience you get to select from what's left. Often this can be OK as, say upgrading from Y to J, you have available the option of the vacated allocation of those WP who had upgraded to F.
 
First off, I am new at this, so my ignorance is all-apparent - apologies. As a WP, wanting to get upgrades to J for self, wife (SG) and child (PS) on int'l flights, I have always used points to get upgrades for the 3 of us to J (but sometimes miss out), and accordingly have never received an op-up. It occurred to me that I might have had a real shot at getting an op-up if I didn't do that. My question: what are my chances of getting my upgrade if (a) I book Y and queue up at earliest opportunity, (b) book premium economy and hope for op-up, or (c) is there another (better) option?
 
And I should have added - what influences chance of an op-up? Is it influenced by whether you're flying discount Y, straight Y or premium Y?

OpUps are vary rare. Typically they occur when a substitution needs to be made to an aircraft, or during periods like school holidays when Economy is oversold.

OpUps would probably be processed on a bunch of factors: how many people they need to bump up, the status of the passengers in question, the cost of the ticket and so on.

I know I've been on a few flights with work colleagues when I've been OpUp-ed and they have not. I was WP, they were not - that's the only thing I can think of that differentiated us, as we were all on the same fare basis ticket.

Upgrades will be granted when there's available seats in the higher cabin. Op Ups only occur when QANTAS needs to make more seats available in the lower cabin. So the driver is completely different.

when requesting upgrade with points for self and family on same PNR, does the status of the one whose points are being used "rank" everyone on that PNR as that status or if wife and child are bronze, and me WP then does that just lower their chances to next to none? As much as I would love to fly J to LA if I got the upgrade it and they didn't, I dont think the rest of the trip would be worth it !! :lol:

An upgrade request is for all pax on the booking, and the status of the one making the request is the important thing.
