A380 in Y - best seats (80A/80K/71D/50C etc.)

Hi all,

I have an upcoming flight on the new A380 and to my surprise when ringing QF to get seat allocation I was able to secure seat 80K on the baby. This surprised me as seat 80K appears as an exit row seat and i thought QF only allocates exit rows at check in? Can anyone elaborate further on this? My only explanation is that because seat 80K has no seat in front of it, it is not considered an exit row seat as such as the true exit is at row 79? Also if anyone has been on the A380 is this seat a good location as on seat guru it appears as a great location. I have applied for a J upgrade but just want to know if this seat is great when my upgrade does not come through as I am a realist when it comes to upgrades and expect to sit in the class I paid for at all times.

79 is the exit row, and it just so happens that there is no 79A or 79K.

Thanks for the info but am I correct in assuming as I am 6' 5" 80K is going to be a great seat to have, not unlike the A and K seats on the 747 in the exit row

I'm preallocated to travel in 80A on March 9th.

The life boat/escape slide cowling is where 79A/K would have been. 80A/K have great legroom but to exit via the space with 79A/K not existing means the cowling needs to be stepped over. There is a handy grab rail beside the exit door that can be used to facilitate this.

Watch for the Grumpy 79C/H resident who keeps getting bumped into as people walk through the angled curtain right into them.

Thanks Serfty, so a tall person like me should find 80K excellent. When you say step over the cowling I presume it is not like a massive step, just a slight in-convenience I can handle for the extra leg room. Would the person sitting in 80J attempt to get out in front of me or go via 80H instead.

Having an empty seat next to you, is even better. Almost as good as whY+ IMHO.

It's interesting actually, on my PER-NRT and NRT-PER, I snagged 24F (I think), which is a similar deal. No seat in front..... and on both flights, which were relatively full still had an empty seat next to me..

Actually I considered the 80A seat to be better than an exit seat as you are protected from those who desire to do calisthenics mid flight when all else is quiet. :shock:

Also, in an exit seat you are almost certain to have a seat mate - many of whom "take up quite a bit more cubic cabin space than the average PAX".

Even if there had have been an 80B occupant it would have been OK due the significant shoulder space between you and the wall (see front shot).

Still, 66A/K are also good option.

thanks for the pictures of seat 80, it looks quite nice and I look forward to it tomorrow on QF31. I was hoping to see a J upgrade come through and as of yesterday it looked promising as loads showed all 9 but this afternoon it dropped down to all 3 so my chances are running out but 80 looks great.

I'm currently in 80K for my LHR-SIN, and I notice that 80A has now become available. Are they both much of a muchness, or would you guys go for A over K?

I had 80A back from LAX last month and I found it better than the exit row for a few reasons. (I traveled over in 79B)

Apparently there is a vent above the exit row they cannot turn off (so I was told by the cabin crew) and it can blow cold air on you. (They brought me down a J Blanket which was good)

Also as you are not really allowed to pull the tv screen up during takeoff and landing to view the Skycam you should be able to view it on your neighbours 80B where as you can't do this in the exit row.

Lastly as mentioned before it is more likely that you won't have a seat partner in 80B whereas you will be almost guaranteed one in an exit row. (The person in 80C missed the connection so 80B moved over to give us an empty seat which was great)

For my next flight in Nov I have selected 80K as I normally sleep to my right but did notice that when I booked the seat both were showing available with KVS tool. As soon as I selected 80K, 80A changed to blocked but I could still see it under the qantas manage my booking tool but it has since been snagged so maybe you may need status to get this seat when one is already taken.

When I snagged mine 80A was already taken, and I was a QP NB (so no status really); this was in April so was before the recent changes they've made with pre-allocation. All my seats for each of my legs are quite good, and I dare say if I had booked this week and tried to get the same seats I wouldn't be able to

I have been allocated 80 H-K for SYD-SIN. Weighing up whether to apply for 79 H & J (1 week before travel) or request points upgrade to either Why+ or J for all 3 pax - advice would be appreciated.

I recommend avoiding 79H/J, the 79H resident will get little peace with all the traffic coming down though the angled curtain and bumping into them. In turn this may disturb the rest for 79J.

In any case, that's a nice comfortable evening flight - I would stick with the seating you have.
