TBIT 'Qantas' Business Lounge - extremely confused, as are staff

Hi all!

I just thought I'd quickly write to document my experience on arrival at the TBIT Qantas Business Lounge on Friday.

I'm a Qantas Club member, and the short version is - I was denied access.

The long version:

I was flying from Sydney->Lax->SEA in economy. The Sydney->LAX was great, and I kicked it off with a stint in the Sydney business lounge - always a pleasure there, and the staff are lovely.

The LAX->SEA leg is where it gets interesting. The boarding pass for this leg was printed in Sydney, and sold to me as QF3739. The whole trip was purchased directly from Qantas, and both my boarding passes were issued by Qantas. The operator for this leg, however, was Alaskan - and the primary flight number was AS475.

Ahead of time I checked the access rules for the TBIT lounge for Qantas Club members, which are as follows:

'Next onward flight that day must be a Qantas, or Jetstar Airlines+ flight number.One guest allowed and must be travelling with the member on the same flight.'

I made sure to call the QFF hotline ahead of time to clarify this, and these assured me that there would be no issue. In fact, I further clarified this at the Qantas checkin desk in TBIT before heading through security (I didn't want to waste my time). However, upon arriving at the front desk of the lounge, there were two issues:

1. The staff member at the desk didn't know what the Qantas Club was, despite entry rules for Qantas Club members being clearly posted on the Qantas website for this lounge. It was a bit odd standing at the desk explaining the concept of the Qantas Club to this staff member, who perhaps might not be a Qantas employee - but was still representing Qantas.

2. Despite my boarding pass clearly having a Qantas flight number allocated 'Sold as QF3739', and the flight clearly showing as QF3739 in my Qantas app on my phone, the staff member was quite abrupt, and would only scan the boarding pass and say 'computer says no'. I should have thought of it at the time, but I didn't get call the QC hotline to discuss it further (I'd just got off a long flight!).

I'm now in Seattle, and have made several calls to the QFF line (I called first on Sunday, Australian time, and there was no supervisor available). I have subsequently spoken to a supervisor, and they agreed after a quick internal conference that they see no reason I should have been denied access, and my reading of the rules was correct.

They have offered to 'pass my comments on' - but honestly I feel like this has had the effect of reducing the value of my QC membership (lounge access being the very reason I purchased it in the first place...) has been substantially reduced here - and that 'passing my comments on' is a polite way of simply getting rid of me.

Has anyone else had an experience such as this? I was originally unsure as to whether I would be allowed lounge access at TBIT on this codeshare flight, but now that every Qantas staff member I've spoken to seem to believe that I should have been - it seems odd to me that they're being so dismissive of this. The whole experience was a bit embarrassing to me, as I had a staff member with me as my 'lounge guest', so to be turned away was an even less pleasant experience.

As I said to them, this kind of dismissal of Qantas Club members is precisely what will make me reconsider renewing next year..

In your position I'd be making a formal complaint in writing and asking for either a discount or free X months extension to your QC membership, seems pretty cut and dried that a service was advertised and sold but not provided, its up to Qantas to "man up" and either enforce QC access as the rules say even if it means treading on some AA/BA/EK/CX/MH lounge dragon toes (which you were unreasonably denied) or change their advertising or discount their QC membership fees to reflect the decrease in services provided.

I'd be asking for an F lounge invitation as compensation. The lounge dragon was clearly in the wrong.

Unfortunately - despite the usual high quality of lounge staff at the LAX QF lounges - there are clearly some training issues for dragons.

I have had issues at LAX before where the QF lounge dragon didn't know the rules - it's always good to have the access rules page on your phone to show them. And then you can politely but firmly point the rules out. You can also politely ask for the lounge manager.

I believe you also have access to the Boardroom in LAX as well as a QC member.

It's a pet peeve of mine that QF do not ensure that staff are properly and correctly trained before being let loose in public.

The QF LAX lounges are excellent and, whilst not quite on par with international lounges in SYD and MEL; they are very good and the staff are excellent relative to U.S. standards.

In this instance it is a Qantas Fail - and I would PM Red Roo so that it can be escalated directly with lounge management and Customer Care.

There have been 'issues' reported from time to time about LAX staff not knowing much about the organisation they are supposed to be representing.

Do not be satisfied with QF saying they will report 'feedback'. Make a formal written complaint and tell them that its a complaint, not 'feedback' and ask for a written response (and something like small compo as suggested above). Its only when something like this makes a mark in their internal processes that we have a hope in heck of getting the airline to improve their QC in the QPs.

So I've heard - I thought I came 'armed' with information - especially after asking in Sydney, and at TBIT Qantas desk..
 
I have subsequently discovered that - I can only hope they offer a better experience there.

In my experience, they know less about QP and the alliance with Qantas than the LAX people (on average). Obviously take written copy of lounge entry rights. I had a long conversation with them once asking about the various permutations of access for Qantas people, and posted it on a thread here. Can't find it now, but a search might be useful.

EDIT: this post is about access to the Boardroom at SEA. Sorry for any confusion.

This is important as there has been a few reported issues lately with the staff at TBIT incorrectly denying passengers access to this lounge.

Also, 'computer says no'?? If that were the case, then Qantas urgently need to be looking at their computer systems.

AA has recently issued a reminder email to the QF TBIT lounges reminding staff that AA Elites do not get lounge entry unless on an International itinerary.

Lounge staff have erroneously misinterpreted this as "AA Passengers", (and no doubt "AS" as per the OP). I am aware of quite a few incorrect lounge entry denials occurring recently.

Red Roo - perhaps you could take this up with LAX Lounge Management directly as it appears to be a systemic issue.

Terminal 6 - as it was Q3739/AS475 - I think Alaskan fly solely out of Terminal 6 at LAX.

I originally got the idea from this forum to go back into TBIT with my Terminal 6 boarding pass based on the success of others - but it would appear not in this case. I'd also heard the thing regarding 'international itineraries' for AA flights etc - but looking at this lounge's rules for QC members, it didn't seem that applied (and Qantas assured me at Sydney, and downstairs at TBIT - that it didn't)


Also - regarding the 'computer says no' - I think it was just a convenient cop-out for her, being able to scan the boarding pass and say that it said no - Interesting, I've subsequently scanned the barcode on my boarding pass, and it returns:

So obviously the primary flight number is AS475 - but notice the 8733739 down the bottom? Not sure what 873 indicates (Qantas's airline number?) - but the 3739 is obviously QF3739..

Yes, I have come across two separate reports of non Advantage elites (BAEC Gold - aka EMERALD) travelling on domestic AA flights (one out of TBIT itself) being denied access.

I guess verbal assurances aren't generally worth the paper they are written on.

It seems with the "computer says no" situation, even a hard copy printout of the access page (I linked above) may not have worked.

However, given the issues I have come across recently, in your situation I would have, at the very least, been armed with that hard copy.

"International Itineraries" is a requirement that only applies to AA elites - as they are not permitted lounge access on purely domestic itineraries.

I wonder if it was because on AS boarding passes (I realise this was issued by QF) QF don't share status information with AS and other codeshare partners, except for Oneworld and EK airlines. So potentially that is why 'computer said no', but still the lounge staff should still know better and should have asked for QC card and admitted access.

I did actually show them my Qantas card - but the staff member at the front didn't seem to recognise it, or understand what the Qantas Club was - despite me showing her on my phone the Qantas website for that lounge, which clearly states QC members are permitted entry.

Qantas' "airline number" appears on the e-ticket as the 081- prefix of the 'ticket number'.
 
Seems that no matter what you did you were not going to get access. Hope QF makes up for it on the return legs.
