There are two people in this itinerary and looks like it costs 20,000 points to upgrade a 1607-mile leg. It's booked in O class and normally I wouldn't be able to upgrade at all. The upgrade cost is 16,000 points from -Y to J, or 10,000 points from Y to J.

So my guess is that Qantas has introduced upgrades from deep discount economy (e.g. O and N) to business at a higher tier.

You may have stumbled on a promo QF do from time to time, I have changed the title to see if we get any other reports of similar outcomes!

No love for me on my only forward 'O' class booking... "Upgrade Not Available"

I have received a promo last year also for a trans-Tasman flight. However only 16k points were required and I received an email. This is 20k, which can't be found anywhere in the upgrade award table.

Well spotted zhoutong!

I’m excited to announce, effective today, we’re introducing the option to use your points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award on sales fares booked in N, O or Q class on Qantas flights across the Tasman.

While communication with the details will be available to all our members soon, I can confirm that bookings from AKL, CHC, WLG and ZQN (vice versa) to SYD, BNE, MEL and PER (vice versa), for departures 18SEP 2013 -30MAR 2014 can now request a flight upgrade using Qantas Points.

Hope this makes you smile too. :)

Only those running A330 worth the upgrade. (Perth - Tasman)
Otherwise was recline seat so I won't bother.

Stumbled over this when looking to maybe upgrade a domestic sector on my return to NZ from TSV. Pleased to see the option to upgrade the SYD-WLG sector for 20k points.
