Qatar Airways daily Canberra flights commence 12 February 2018

Qatar Airways new flight into Canberra will be operated effective 12FEB18 and the schedule is as follows:




Days: Daily



Aircraft: B777-300ER




QR 906 Dep DOH 0810 Arr SYD 0615+1

QR 906 Dep SYD 0725 Arr CBR 0825




QR 907 Dep CBR 1345 Arr SYD 1445

QR 907 Dep SYD 1555 Arr DOH 2230


Looks to me they are prepared to fly a near empty aircraft between Sydney and Canberra just to get a 2 daily service into Sydney under the current bilateral agreements. I can only assume once the new bilateral agreements is signed, Canberra will be dropped.

Bit disappointing to see as a Canberran :(

Wow. This really does demonstrate the stupidity and lack of financial concern of the ME3. CBR airport will think it's a win, but really does show how the ME3 has such a sway in global aviation to the detriment of true competitive free markets.
 
They didn't want to fly to SYD for years and now they are being super creative in finding a way to get two flights! Will be a busy sector for the crew... not too many 777 services in the world on such a short flight.
 
Also a short time in SYD to load all the luggage and also the catering and any delays will have big flow on effects

But not such a good J product for SYD-DOH, being 2-2-2. A 359 would have been much nicer.

Aren't they upgrading those to the new Q-Suites?

Regardless, while not the best J hard product, its still pretty decent and certainly the best J soft product.

I would expect that they would get off and have to go through international connections security.
When UA had the SYD-MEL tag, did people going to/from MEL have to get off in SYD?

Not enough time for a lounge visit so rather irritating if that's the case.

I believe that's the case on any one plane through service. Just ask all the happy campers who flew QF8 in the past DFW/SYD and were unaware about stopping in BNE first and having to disembark in the wee hours to do transit security. Same same for pax on JQ58 SIN/CNS that didn't know about going via DRW and having to wave bye bye to a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue label at 0430.
 
Regarding the old United arrangements...

For Mel-syd-lax You got off straight into the departure gate area with your cabin bags then boarded again with everyone else an hour later. Usually the Mel-syd aircraft went to sfo though so it was a change of aircraft but if you were going to SFO you'd be on same plane. Security was already passed through in Melbourne and did not need to do it again . In reverse you went through security at international connections iirc.

This is of absolutely no surprise, when Qatar announced out of the blue that they where doing a DOH-CBR flight everyone (including many in CBR airports management) went "Um, what???"
There was rumors that this was simply a tag flight, and it's now obvious that it is.

Whilst CBR airport wants to count this as a "win", I hardly see it as such. All it is is a tag flight which arrives / departs from SYD T1. Yes no terminal transfer for us CBR'ns, but it's that final hop after a long haul is the thing we hate.

Of course despite all this really being is another CBR-SYD flight (albeit on a much bigger plane than normal), that won't stop CBR from using it in all their promotional materials, and of course it may be used to get other carriers to fly here directly.

Yes but that saves a good hour, possibly more at SYD
 
I'm intrigued by the possibility of this providing an alternative to the usual QF Dash-8 or B717 - Plus with F Lounge access! Wey-hey!
