I’ve been with Amex for 20 years and over time I perfectioned the art of squeezing as much value as I can out of my cards!
The AMEX Platinum Charge Card is my preferred card – lots of perks such as free Accor Advantage Plus membership (includes a free hotel night a year and Platinum Accor) & free Priority Pass to access airport lounges internationally & free International travel insurance & free access to Virgin Australia lounges & Platinum Concierge service & Point transfers to 10 airlines, I also get a free AMEX Platinum Reserve card with it which includes a free return flight to Australia / New Zealand with Virgin every year – and with the bonus points from the referral offer this card is truly a no-brainer if you love travelling in style but you don’t fancy paying the price!

Here is my referral link: https://www316.americanexpress.com/...F53031BB2&mgmerSource&MGMURN=AAAABgQTHg4eCw==

By using this link you receive 90,000 membership rewards as sign-up bonus and I also get 20,000 bonus points :)

As I said I've been using the card for 20 years so if you need any tips & tricks on the subject feel free to PM me!

Thank you!

Way too expensive to get 90K points by paying $1200.

The Velocity Amex 110K points offer ($349) is way better value with free flights and lounge pass provided. Also those Velocity points can be converted to 81481 Krisflyer points which also very valuable. See link on signature below.

It really depends on your usage & travel patterns - the Platinum Charge card comes with several features that are not provided by the Velocity Amex, such as:

- $200 travel credit, you can use this against flights, accommodation and car hire
- Accor Plus (valued at $335, includes a free hotel night - including Sofitel & 10% discount on cheapest Accor rates & 50% discount on restaurants)
- Unlimited access for you and a guest to Virgin Australia domestic lounges (Virgin Amex only provides 2 single entry passes a year)
- Unlimited access to AMEX international airport lounges for you and 2 guests (includes Sydney lounge)
- Priority Pass providing access to over 700 airport lounges worldwide for you and a guest + another Priority Pass for one of your additional cardholders
- Automatic upgrade to premium membership level with several hotel chains (e.g. Accor Platinum, IHG Gold,
- A more comprehensive international travel insurance that also covers your spouse and dependents
- A free flight with the additional Platinum Reserve card, this includes NZ destinations (Virgin Amex is domestic flights only)
- Ability to transfer points 10 airline ff programs - not just Virgin and Singapore Airlines (note with the latter you loose 35% of your points for the transfer)

So ultimately it really depends on your travel patterns... if you travel internationally and use most of the perks above then it's really a no brainer, you will recover the $1200 yearly fee for the Amex Charge Platinum very quickly. If you mainly travel domestically (on Virgin) and don't stay in major hotel chains then you are absolutely right, there's no point in going all the way for the Amex Charge Platinum and you will be better off with Virgin Platinum Amex.

As it's the case for all credit cards - you really need to spend some time going through the T&C's before you decide which credit card to apply for ;)
