Just to echo a couple of peeves: People standing right on the carousel while collecting bags - what makes them think their bags are coming out before anybody else's? ... and I have to say that (despite only being 183 cm tall) it is now virtually impossible (in economy) to put my knees...

Interesting - I've got no doubt that any such guess would probably be accurate on most, if not all flights! That's the first I've heard of a "serious" announcement like that (I had one on an AA flight in the States a few weeks back, but was clearly joking, as a way to remind people to turn off)...

Like most commenters here, I'd be happy NOT to have to put up with other people's conversations in-flight, but SMS and (especially) data access would be useful (albeit expensive!)

And how many times have you accidentally left your phone switched on for a flight - if it was really a problem, they would know that and not take off until all phones/devices were off.

That restriction may be more to do with their carrier than the airline - most telcos don't allow access to (eg) Skype - you need to be connected to wifi to use it on the phone
