For me, Chase has the best cards, especially the Sapphire Preferred and Ink cards, also UA cards give expanded award availability. But what works for me as a US/AUS citizen with a SSN doesn't always work for others. You need a good Fico score which comes with time.

Cap 1 is iffy even with US citizens with the fraud alerts and approval criteria. I would feel more comfortable if I could walk into a branch and apply in person but cranches are few on the ground. Their cafes seem more like glorified Starbucks, no real banking service...

If you have a long connection it is easy to get the metro into town at either DXB or DOH for a bit of shopping. If TK is also in the mix, I believe they have free city tours if you have a long layover but you would need an online visa assuming Aussie passport.
