I don't trust Amex full stop so I've requested a transcript of my recent calls with them before going further. I've made my intentions clear but Manila is so convenient for them to use as their scapegoats.

Finally got some clarity around reinstating cards after talking to the executive customer relations team. Credit cards cannot be re-instated due to credit laws but charge cards aren't affected. They've thrown the Manila person under the bus for misleading info provided.

Amex have marked one of the cards as closed considering the account was only closed last Thursday. However, the other card I had closed on the same day haven't been touched yet. Then again there was a positive balance on it (cheque heading my way) maybe that affected it?

How long does it take Amex to mark your account as closed?

Use the 'my card is broken' option. Your supposedly broken card will remain active until its expiry and have no issues with manually enrolled offers too.

I've asked twice during the call and it's a no on both occasion. Amex could learn a thing or three from Amazon from a customer service, retention and service recovery perspectives...

Like everyone else, called to cancel the cards, no retention offered and can't re-instate the card even if I've made a mistake. Felt liberating. The lack of offers recently certainly encouraged this and I'll be Amex free come January when the Edge is up for renewal.

That Langton's one is probably card-specific - all my cards that have been used in the previous offer were not targeted.
