    General Medical issues thread

What's the official medical opinion (AMA?) on acupuncture, administered properly and professionally, say for pain relief? Quackery? Sometimes works? Potentially dangerous? How about electro stim with acupuncture?

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Well, can you believe it. Here I am having a lovely steak dinner on the pool deck as a refugee from formal or jacket wearing dinner everywhere else on the ship’s bars or restaurants. And in walks this bloke wearing a jacket and tie!! It’s probably 30°. It’s the thin edge of the edge! The...

    Boutique or Chain Hotels?

All things being equal, I’d choose an independent or small chain boutique hotel but I choose hotels based on location and price. Since I’ve attained Accor+ plat, that skews choice a bit in their favour but by no means it handcuffs me to them.

    Dress Codes when Cruising

I suspect expedition cruises would be more your style. Fantastic photography opportunities and, depending who you go with, no or the barest of dress codes.

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

A last look at Willemstad, as we departed late in the evening. Backing out 19,000 steps and I slept well! Another Formal-optional night tonight; night before I disembark at Cartagena. I'm going to join the 'slobs' (reference cruising dress code thread) and subversives at...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Over dinner on the outside deck of La Terrazza (my earlier seating problems having been overcome with a gentle word to two of the maître d' s :)), a magnificent view of the pontoon bridge opening fully and a ship transiting out. Another walk in the warm evening; the place was really...

    2025 travel plans

The area on the immediate mainland shore line I have a historical interest in - one of the early settlers I study came from there. He settled in the Hobart area and the suburb Lindisfarne got its name from his farm there. So going across the causeway will be an easy extension.

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

On the way back to the ship for a reviving G&T. The weather was quite good - maybe 30 degrees. humid, but a sea breeze came in. the pontoon bridge is called 'the swinging old lady' :) ______________________________ And I found the Christmas menu. Foie gras terrine, cream of porcini...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Then a real gem. I stumbled across a little arty/cafe neighbourhood called Bon Bini. The wider area was originally settled in 1707, it grew as a prosperous neighbourhood, but when the access ramp for the Queen Juliana bridge divided the area in the 1970s, it declined into drugs and...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Went back to the Orobanda side and just followed my nose. Amazed that even random back streets still had lovely houses and even the less lovely ones still brightly painted.

A walk around the town. Many souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. This lady is called Chichi. During the pandemic, an arts co-op crowdfunded itself and you could pay to decorate a sq cm of Chichi. I guess that explains the generous proportions - more revenue acreage ! Main...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Lunch on board, and then out to explore the town. Fantastic place - completely different vibe to all the other places we have been to, and the only place I'd want to return to if I had the chance. Besides the pretty buildings etc, the place is clean; the footpaths don't have gaping holes...

    2025 travel plans

On the same trip as the Greenland cruise, I'm flying into Inverness, hiring a car to drive through the highlands down to Edinburgh and onto Holy Island (that I missed out due to carp weather last time), then back to Edinburgh to take the train down to London. Hadn't thought of the Sleeper. Add...

La Mer, le Canal & les Pyrénées

Odd, not doubting your experiences, but I spent a lot of time in Morocco over 3 years when geologising for a company I and some mates established and terrible driving isn't one of my memories. Except maybe for Casablanca, which I found to be a hole. They had just opened a new tramway and the...

    Dress Codes when Cruising

I don't think Ponant has any prohibitions do they? Just encouragement on the gala nights? So was this just your choice so you could dress comfortably?

They are not UN members and as far as I can tell, are not in the Schengen Zone. I was going to count both Curaçao and Aruba but think I will compromise and just count 'Netherlands Antilles'. :) I wonder what stamp you get if flying in?

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Then it was off to a distillery, where they produce the famous 'Blue Curaçao' liqueur. A quick walk-though, a tasting (tiny sips in those little plastic cups they give you to take pills from) then of course a buying opportunity. Virtually no-one did. All the same, except for flavouring...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Christmas day was a sea-day and quiet - lunch and dinner with the great couple I mentioned before. Special Christmas dinner menu but I can't find the pics now. On the Antarctica cruise (Silver Wind) Christmas day there was a decidedly festive atmosphere over dinner - carol singing by staff in...

Christmas markets in Europe and Caribbean cruise (RTW)

Yesterday (27th), they moved me to a different cabin. If you don't want to hear me having another whinge, go no further. One funny thing in moving cabins - My butler insisted in taking both my suitcase and carry-on in the move, leaving me to walk in front. He was surprised and a bit...

    Greenland expedition cruise August 2025

I think my travel agent had to register with them before she could do anything and I think in the end she just booked me in a sort of regular way. As you have a travel agent, they should be able to deal with the changing of flights reasonably well, but yes, there may be some cost. And judging...
