CEO retiring, what changes at Qantas would you like to see

Being ethical, acting in good faith, putting people first, focusing on training/supporting people on the front line. Matt Golding usually says it best, so I’d like to see an end to this:

Thanks for that very interesting explanation @AviatorInsight

ACCC action re cancelled Qantas flights

Uncharacteristically contrite indeed. It almost reads like the board has released this without going through the normal management spin cycle.

QF now the 13th most distrusted brand in Australia (Roy Morgan)

Here’s a very interesting piece from Michael Sainsbury. For those of us who have suffered great disruption in our travels, it’s sobering reading. https://www.crikey.com.au/2023/09/04/qantas-flights-cancelled-tickets-alan-joyce/

    Ask The Pilot

I was walking down Collins St in Melbourne a few minutes ago and noticed a 737 rocketing through the sky above me. So unusual did the speed seem that I opened Flight Radar and saw that it was VA 1365 inbound from LST. According to FR, the aircraft was at 270knots and 4,000ft, which appeared to...

QF now the 13th most distrusted brand in Australia (Roy Morgan)

I think Matt Golding’s cartoon in the SMH captures the public mood perfectly.

Should Qantas pay back Job Keeper ?

True, but given QF’s operating margins, the positive cash flow generated to fund fleet investment would have been in the vicinity of $800m-$1.3b. I know Joyce likes to talk up revenue lost, but he also had skeleton costs and plenty of government support which mitigated most of the cash burn.

Should Qantas pay back Job Keeper ?

The 787 orders and options were cancelled well before COVID. The 321neos have, I believe, been deferred 7 times since the order was first placed. Blaming COVID for the fleet mess is very much one of Alan’s alternate universe excuses that is demonstrably false.

Should Qantas pay back Job Keeper ?

Which is probably a function of the market’s growing concern at QF’s upcoming capex bill that’s been deferred and deferred.

Should Qantas pay back Job Keeper ?

Joyce used Covid to accelerate his transformation programme, resetting the cost base. If you recall, coming out of Covid he was out spruiking the $1b of “structural cost savings” due in large part to significant downsizing of the workforce. They made many senior staff redundant as part of...

Should Qantas pay back Job Keeper ?

It’s an interesting question, to which I’m not yet sure of the answer. In some respects I’d say the ship has already sailed and so bad is their reputation at the moment they’d probably get little uplift from it. What’s quite interesting is what this week has potentially done to the company’s...

ACCC action re cancelled Qantas flights

This could be especially interesting in the context of Joyce liquidating 90% of his QF holding for $17m some weeks ago.

ACCC action re cancelled Qantas flights

Maybe that’s a good business opportunity for you to explore…because quite frankly, most of us don’t have the time to devote our lives to this sort of stuff. We just want to get from A to B at the promised time. And as an aside, I certainly wasn’t going to risk being $20k out of pocket by doing...

ACCC action re cancelled Qantas flights

All good in theory, but it would seem you haven’t faced a Qantas cancellation before because the experience is nothing like that. Case in point, I was booked in F on QF1 which was cancelled, due to a mechanical fault. The flight was eventually cancelled 5 hours after scheduled departure time...

ACCC action re cancelled Qantas flights

Qantas has really gotten itself into a pickle and has set itself up for what is now a perfect storm of bad press and pressure from all fronts. While there’s been a lot of coverage of domestic cancellations, it’s on international flights that Qantas has really become a dog’s breakfast. They’ve...

    AFR's Joe Aston goes BAM!

I don’t disagree for the most part. Most airlines were difficult to deal with during Covid and in some respects, even worse in the recovery. Was Qantas the worst? Probably not. Qantas’ current position in the firing line is however a result of its own goals. Early on, instead of being...

    Another grubby QANTAS lounge experience...

I have pretty good experiences overall in the domestic J lounges I frequent most - MEL and PER. But I do find the Sydney J lounge is nearly always disgusting - be it chairs, the floor or the toilets. It’s always a mess.

    AFR's Joe Aston goes BAM!

I found the flight credits part of the testimony particularly galling, especially after the AFR’s piece this morning. I find it almost impossible to believe that Joyce does not know a ballpark figure of credits across the group. And if he does not, surely that is a breach of his fiduciary duty...

Downgraded from Business Class on Qantas due to "tech crew" [pilot] Travel Requirements

Credit where credit is due, I’m shocked that QF wrote to you proactively without you following up. But perhaps that says more about my expectations of Qantas nowadays… I don’t think the email is sufficient. I’d push them to provide an explanation on why this happened. I’d also be reminding them...

Qantas orders new 787s and A350s

I have long held on to this theory too, especially given the precedent set with the A330s. But when I put this theory to someone very senior in QF Group fleet planning a couple of months ago, he told me this is not a scenario they are planning for. At all. As if to say, totally off the cards...
